hello
forgot to add oil to gas and 1968 9.5 johnson stoped after about 4 min. of smooth going. coulden't pull rope after that but after 5 min. it turned over again. after adding oil it went fine.
should i expect that there is some damage done that i don't know about yet?

Could be some damage, maybe not. :(
Took a year off its life, only 19 years left in that motor now. :)

Re: forgot oil

Certainly did some damage, but probably not that bad. I ran my '74 150hp Mercury for about 10 minutes at WOT with no oil. :D It seized, but after using about twice as much oil as usual I got it to turn over slowly and start. At first it would barely run, but after a few minutes it seemed to run as good as before. A few hours later it died permanently - though I thought it was because of the oil problem, it was actually because the distributor seized up as well, a completely unrelated problem.

After that I tore the motor open, 1 cylinder was in very bad condition, another was slightly scuffed, and the remaining 4 actually still had factory hone marks and no scuffing. The bearings all looked fine too. I would do a compression test on your motor, and if it has removeable heads unlike mine, you might want to take them off and look at the cylinders.

ONLY 19?? I'd say 29, and it would have been 32 without the brain fart. (owner of a '74 merc kicker and an '82 Johnson main engine).

Seriously, whenever I read the "VRO vs. pre-mix" threads, this is the reason I'm leaning toward thinking automatic oiling is inherantly safer and more reliable than pre-mixing. Sure, the mechanism could fail, but having pre-mixed for many years, I know for a fact that the human pre-mixer also fails, and I think it's more often than the machine. Just an opinion mind you.
