So I bought a boat for my birthday this year.
I was all excited this was my first boat and I was all proud. I went picked up my girl friend and said hey lets go out on the water. All the way to the lake im struggling with the trailer because I have never driven one before.

I'm talking like I know what I'm going, and I'm all excited to get in the water.
Get to the launch, get all the strapps off back it up a little bit, push it off the rest of the way jump in the boat and...glug glug glug, we start going down....I forgot the plug.

Had to wave to my girlfriend to back the trailer back up to get it on so I could drain it.

I felt so stupid, and I was very close to going under

Re: Forgot the plug

Not to worry, I just read in the August 2008 iboats review that there are three types of boaters in the world. Those that forgot the plug, those that will forget the plug, and those that lie about it.

I came close the other week. I was up at Saranac Lake New York on vacation. Started backing the boat down into the water when I remebered the plug. I didn't quite get water in it but it was very close.

The nice position you're in now that after an experience like that you'll never forget again. When my plug is out, I attach it to my boat key chain as a helpful reminder. I've also read that people put a note at the front tie down so when they loosen the strap or chain they will see the note.

Re: Forgot the plug

Welcome to boating!

Every boater, new or old will forget the plug at least once in their lifetime.

Stay safe.

I deff wont forget to do that again. I now keep the plug tied to a rope thats attached to the chain that holds my motor in the boat

Re: Forgot the plug

I once forgot my plug and launched anyway, got up on plane fast and was only going to be on the water for a few minutes before I got to the dock. I blew my motor up half way to the dock. I ended up stuffing a shirt into a plastic bag, feeding it through the hole and pulling it tight.

Now thats stupid!

Re: Forgot the plug

I recently sold my 20' Beachcraft to a man who said that he's downsizing from a 30' cruiser. He also said that he's owned several smaller boat and was very familiar with boating. So off he goes with the boat in tow, then several days later he called to say he really loves the boat that I sold him but he had a couple of mishaps on his first outting. The first is when he pulled the trailer our from the side of his house, he cut too soon and crunched the fender. Not a problem he said, he took a big ***** hammer and banged it away from the tire. He then trailered to the launch, parks his truck and off he and his wife goes. Several minutes later he said that he noticed that the cooler that he set in the cabin was floating . Yeap, he tells me he forgot to put the plug in. All in all, he closes our conversation with, "I really love this boat!" :p

Re: Forgot the plug

That's no biggie as long as you catch it in time. I once forgot to take the plug out after fishing one morning and went and parked the boat next to my barn. Left it uncovered because I wanted to air it out a bit. Forgot about it for a few days and the next time I look at it the tires looked like they were flat, but they were fine. Had a half a boat full of water. You see, we got a torrential rainstorm before I got the cover on it and the barn doesn't have gutters. The boat was catching all the rain it could along with all the rain off of the barn. Wound up draining it and moving stuff around so I could get in in the barn to air out for about a month.
