I also posted the same question under Merc/Mariner forum for those who don't frequent this one. Just wondering why the Evinrude/Johnson forum has twice the number of topics and posts vs that of the Mercury/Mariner forum.

Is one that much more popular than the other or does it reflect more problems with one vs the other ?

This might be interesting

There is about 15 times as many Johnrudes running today as there are Mercs.
Johnrudes from the 40's, 50's, and 60's are still running strong where-as most of the merc produced in that time period have found the end of their life.

Propably because, The OMC is a more widely used engine. Certainly! the Mercury is a very fine engine. I feel! to argue that point is foolish. Like! Ford Vs, Chev. There are still a lot of old OMC engines' in running condition, and the people on this board want to take them back to that state. If you travel the rivers', and lakes', you will see a lot of old OMC engines clear back to the 50's. It is rare to see the Merc's going back this far. The reason for this is not clear to me. It could have been distrubution, reliability, or dealer back-up of there product. I would not feel left out with either engine. Both are getting better by the year. I will say! with Bombardier in charge, Merc may loose there performance image.

Hasn't Johnson and Evinrude have been around almost twice as long as Mercury?

I'm gonna go with reliability primarily.....but every motor i have ever run ever has been a johnnyrude.....so maybe popularity. idk.

In the end johnnyrudes are easier to work on and IMHO they have much better styling. that could be a factor as well. for a long time it seemed mercs had only very subtle differences in design whereas johnnyrudes are very distinctive by year until the 80s

I picked up 2 free junk (to them) motors. 18hp 1958 Johnson, and a 1960 10hp Merc. Johnny froze up, and Merc just stripped spark plug holes. Ebayed them out. $40 for the Merc, over $380 for the Johnny parts. Although I love the looks of the old Mercs, the Johnson was LIGHT YEARS ahead of the Merc in quality and workmanship and simple reliability. And I just picked up a 1952 3hp Johnson, thats runs like new once I cleaned the carb. Probably never sell it. Simple motor that is leak proof with the gas shut off, and vent closed. Perfect camping motor. Weighs about the same as the cowling alone from the Merc!

Here's one reason you see more omc posts... Evinrude started around 1909 and Merc in 1940. Also, if you ran a 40s, 50s or 60s omc along side the same era Merc, the Merc self destructed long before the omc did.

If this thread isnt proof that any goober with an internet connection cant be an online marine tech with all the answers then i guess i will never see one?? You guys who dont know what your talking about should just learn to be quiet and appear ignorant rather than proving it too everyone else who is qualified too give credible information too the folks who need it!

It's popularity, no questions asked.

Johnson/Evinrude brands probably have (conservatively) a million to one ratio with imports and probably 100 to 1 with Mercury.

dsrchamp04

And just where do you get off telling all of us we're idiots? Oh benevolent wizard you.

dsrchamp04- thats a little harsh in a thread where no one is asking for help and its strictly opinions......I for one know I'm an expert on nothing and only post in the repair forums when im certain I know what I am talking about. Pretty lame to just throw that comment out there and not elaborate. JMHO

I didnt call anyone an idiot...i used the term ignorant...and it quite obviously fits. If your gonna post trash...wether its an opinion or not..then you had better expect that not everyone is gonna agree with you or like what you have too say. Im sure that you will find out that my comments will not offend the folks on here that do such a good job of helping others out with factual and credible information.
