Hey guys, newbie here. I just changed out the impellor on my 1966 Merc Model 110 9.8 HP, and now all I get is forward gear, no matter what position the shifter is in. When I removed the lower unit, the shifter was in Neutral. How do I fix this? Thanks.

When you reassembled the foot you made an error in reassembling the shift linkage or you removed the pin that holds the shifting fork, Zman.

Use your Service Manual (if you don't have one get one or borrow one from the library) and repeat.

Good luck, and welcome aboard. :)

I learned the hard way on this. I finally used vise grips on the shift shaft and on the drive shaft, and basically learned where Forward, Neutral and Reverse are. After that, it was a matter of learning how to align the shift shafts when mating up the lower unit.

Check the connection at the top under the powerhead as JB suggested.... perhaps the pin on the shift shaft 'fork' connector was removed?

Rather than turning the shift shaft on the lower end, its easier just to figure out what gear it is in.

1) Remove your lower unit.

2) Determine what gear position the lower unit is in.
... Neutral - prop spins freely in both directions
... Forward - prop wont turn counter clockwise and will ratchet clockwise
... Reverse - prop will not turn either direction

3) Adjust the shift selector on the motor to match whatever the position the lower unit is currently in.

4) Re-install lower unit.

Thanks guys, the lower unit is in forward gear. I'll give it a shot later today.

I found on my 1976 Merc 200 that it worked better to have the LU and the shifter both in neutral for re-assembly (the manual recommends both in forward, but the neutral detents provide a more positive location for both ends of the shift shaft where it couples).
