I have a 1971 55HP Chrysler. When I adjust the gear rods in LU. The best I can get is it will go in Forward and reverse with it reving. Thats what happens when adjusted centered. I can adjust it to go in forward smooth without acceleration but then it won't go in reverse. I can do the opposite also. I removed LU again to check measurements and it is correct. (1/16) Tried adjusting cables to see if that had anything to do with if, but to no luck. Thanks

Re: Forward/neutral/reverse

Noah,

I have the same engine and did the lower seals last summer. It's amazing how sensitive that adjustment is. (at least with mine) a quarter turn of the connector rod coupling would cause the F or R not to work. I would try it again and just be very patient with very small turns each time. Good Luck.

Re: Forward/neutral/reverse

Read my reply to the thread Force 85 gear problem. The throttle quick-connect is the same.

But yes, that is a fussy lower unit and must be adjusted exactly. Also, be absolutely certain that the lower shift rod is not too tight in the seal. There is enough play in the system that excess tightness there will cause much aggravation. There are a lot of bends in both rods that can flex. The rod should be snug enough to seal water out, yet move smoothly within the seal. If not, replace the seal for about (I think) 8 bucks.

Re: Forward/neutral/reverse

I adjusted the cable per your instructions on the other thread. It stated to adjust cable inner spring 1/4 inch and I did. That did it.

Forward/neutral/reverse all fine and it goes in gear before any acceleration. Thanks again Frank
