Rookie mistake!

Coming off plane looking over right shoulder for boats behind and left hand on gear shift/throttle and accidentally put in reverse while props still spinning forward. Of course clunk and now no FWD, but have reverse. Feels normal when putting in reverse, feels like gear shift binds going in FWD, does not fully engage.

Dug through forums:
1. pulled cable and tested-good
2. Manually put in reverse and hand spun props, reverse engages and can't spin by hand
3. Tried to manually put in FWD at stern, will not go all the way in and do feel some resistance on prop but can still spin by hand.
Note: I can tell the FWD shift is not fully engaged, have not tried to force it.

Time to pull lower unit?
Next steps?
Pull shift mechinism out of unit before dropping complete lower unit?

Its a 2004 5.7Gi-E with a DP out drive.

Yep, pull it or take it to someone to find out what's broke or jammed into place

Thanks CPTbill, I have set up ring and pinions in jeeps, rebuilt countless wrecked cars. I am pretty good with a wrench. This boat stuff makes us car guys nervous.... a little.
