Forward vs. reverse speeds

Are they same? The previous owner replaced the prop with the "opposite pitch". This causes the boat to go forward when you pull back on the throttle lever and backward when you push forward. She said to simply swap the cable in the outdrive (Volvo 280). I don't know much about outdrives, and wondered if the gearing is the same in both directions.

Thanks.

I'm not a Volvo guy, but I doubt that very much.....
I would put the correct prop on it, & call it good.....;)

To the best of my knowledge, the volvos and the bravo III's don't care which direction you go. Set up an Alpha backwards and you get about five minutes before having to replace the drive.

Hopefully they are the same forward and reverse. I don't want to replace the prop unless I have to as it is brand new and has never been used.

Question...when you buy your next prop or a spare prop, are you going to buy a left handed prop?

They are designed to run in either direction, absolutely no problem. At the top of the drive is a cover held on with a screw, remove the cover and reverse the linkage and the boats controls will return to normal. If your unsure take it to any boat shop and they will do it for you, takes about 90 seconds. This feature is one of the many advantages of the early Volvo's over the Merc's. Oh and before somebody else says it........ get yourself a 'genuine' Volvo shop manual.

Thanks. That is what the lady I bought the boat from said.

I have the Clymers manual, where can I get the "genuine" volvo shop manual?

Thanks.

As long as everything works I'll get the same as what is on there now.

[colour=blue]For the specific job of changing the linkage (as paulie described), the clymers is O/K.

Thanks, but I have many more things to do (it's a 1976 after all). It over heats, but the clymers manual seems to explain the cooling system very well. I'll look into the manuals bruce posted a link for, thanks. d:)

I prefer the LH props on my skiboat. Makes for a nicer feel as it helps counter the engine torque.

I had the same thing on a 270 that I got from my FIL. The problem is that the out drive is designed to be able to raise up when it hits an object in the water going forward. This feature is locked out when you go in reverse. Othe wise the prop will raise the out drive in reverse. Bite the bullet and get the corect rotation prop. I kept the old prop fin case of emergency.

There is no such thing as a ‘correct’ rotation prop, either is fine. The rotation of the drive has nothing to do with the reverse hook because the reverse hook is activated by the engine controls. If he leaves it the way it is than yes your right, but when he swaps the linkage over (as is required when using LH props) than the controls return to normal and the reverse hook is again only actuated when it’s in reverse. Volvo engineered the drives to run either way, they didn’t forget the effect this would have on the reverse hook!!

Are you sure about that? I thought that on an I/O, the right handed prop is what counteracts the torque of the engine.

Paulie is right. If the prop is pulling the pawls will catch. No matter what rotation prop that one has. Great outdrive!

Have 2 Left handers on/for my 25 footer. Cheaper on ebay, plus the boat came with them. Makes no diff on my big boat, but its 5000lbs, and has tabs..

Re: Forward vs. reverse speeds

Thanks guys. I'm getting quite the education in outdrives (or stern drives as volvo calls them). And that is a good thing, as I understand engines, but have no experience with outdrives. d:)

Re: Forward vs. reverse speeds

One other question. How can you tell a 270 and 280 apart? There is a note on the manual that implies the drive is a 280. The trim mechanism matches the picture in the manual of a 280. However, the tag on the block implies it should have a 270. How can I be sure which one I have?

Thanks, again...
