Hi All! Long time reader, first time poster. I found this motor through a family friend, and when I heard about it, I was like, right, a 30 year old outboard that was still new. Anyway, Turns out it was exactly that. Even though I didn’t need it, I couldn’t pass it up! Now I’m just going to wipe off a little dust and decide what to do next!

Nice find. If its been run, the entire fuel system needs to be cleaned out and lines replaced. Regardless, it needs a new impeller.

It’s never had fuel in the included tank, which still has a coating of oil in the bottom, which of course has zero rust. No evidence of fuel ever being in the carb. Still has some hand tags attached. After replacing the impeller, I’ll have to do a proper break in. I’ve never had a new 2 stroke, and will make sure I do it right. ( Of course there a lot of varying opinions on what right is) I have an early Starcraft I plan to use this on initially, and will also try it on my ‘69 F7 Alumacraft.

Just follow the Owner's Manual and you'll be OK. What's in there overrides anybody's "opinion".

I had a 1984 model quite similar to it. It had over 600 hours on it when I sold it and it was still running like new.

I found a new ‘89 owners manual on Ebay today. I’ve ordered my impeller, and as soon as I get my Yamaha 15E back together ( It got ran into in traffic on the trailer, and has a broken swivel bracket) , I’ll get this new toy tended to. I’ll never be able to say I have a brand new 89 motor anymore , but it was made to be used. It’s way too big for a paperweight !
