Found a destroyed raw water impeller today.. where to start looking for the pieces?

Well this isnt what I wanted to find in my 383 freshwater cooled (full closed loop) motor today.. I found one piece right in the back side of the pump housing.. next stops are the trans cooler (I always thought this was a Power steering cooler), then the check valve and the fuel cooler.. anyone have any past knowledge of where to start ? Is there a way of just back flushing the system from a specific spot to push it all back out of the hose that would be connected to the raw water pump housing?

What is the "check valve" I did look into the top of that one and didn't see anything in there.

Item "b" would be a power steering cooler if you have an I/O, this drawing is for an inboard

It's easier if you had an older model that didn't have all the other crud on it. It could be all the pieces went out the exhaust but only way to find out is flush everything

The check valve is just to keep water from flowing backwards (IMO like if it did it would actually damage something)

When I had the Donzi I found some pieces in the check valve. It was raw water cooled and the check valve was located just below the circulating water pump. In your model it looks like it is low on the port side.
The distribution housing should also be checked.
Depending on your boat these parts may be a real challenge to get to.

Got it, thanks. I can get to all the hoses without too much effort. Alldodge you are right, I thought it was a PS cooler but got the wrong diagram.. hopefully I find parts in the check valve.. or the distribution housing.. if not it's gotta end up in the heat exchanger right? Going to take it all apart next weekend.. might try to run water backwards through the system and put the impeller back together to verify that all pieces are out.

I have seen lots of those on Volvo Penta. Never really worried about it much except for the one with the cooler. The cooler seemed to catch all of the bits.

Broke this looking for it.. lower port side of the motor.
