i'm assuming that things like this happen when you leave the helm to do something without putting the boat in neutral and go overboard.

Ugh. Makes me sick to my stomach to think about that - seeing your boat motor away as you tread water....

There isn't much worse than I can think of. Knowing that one stupid move on your part just doomed you, and you have some time to think about it, too... <shudder>

July 1977, while fishing many miles out in Lake Erie in I found a 14' boat with a small outboard motor adrift. Same scenario, all the gear including three life jackets was there, but no people. I contacted both the USCG and Canadian officials because the boat had a Canada registration.

I later learned that three adults and one child had been reported missing for two days. What happened, I guess we will never know. Sadly and to the best of my knowledge they were never found.
