My motor wouldnt turn over as I posted the other day on my mercruiser 170 with pre alpha outdrive. I pulled the out drive, she fired up with barely bumping the key...made me happy and sad. I couldnt spin the spline coming out of the out drive and before pulling it checked the oil level which was nothing....I had bought this as my first boat the day before I took it out and it locked up on me in a matter of minutes. Well i figured i'de seperate the upper and lower and see which one would turn diagnosing the other half as the problem but couln't seperate them so I pulled the cap off the top of the outdrive and the cone shaped bearing at the very top that rides inside the cap was chewed up someand with the cap off it freed up the whole outdrive...it even turns with the cap on now but theres some metal filins along the inside walls so it needs to be cleaned and the bearing replaced....how do i get this bearing off or am i better to just let a mechanic service this becusase flushing it out shoulnt be too much, right? And where can i find these parts on the internet?

Better to to have a marine shop take care of this...sounds like it was run dry and I'll be there are a lot more issues in there...

I agree with that......
You might be better off getting a new SEI aftermarket or used drive off of ebay....
I'd go for the SEI.....;)

Well that's what you get for going Merc, when there are better choices (OMC).
All joking aside.

If you ran your outdrive with no lube at all, just about everything in there that has friction with it will be damaged to some extent. It's just that bearing was the first to give up. I just blew the upper out of my OMC 400, the mechanic that put in the impeller didn't permatex the bolts and it sucked up water. One bearing went, but even when you check the other bearing it looks good but is discolored. I sure hope it's not too expensive, but if you look around you should be able to find something out there, especially ebay or on kijiji. Good luck!

He needs more than just the top bearing pulled. The entire drive needs to be dissassembled and rebuilt, as the metal shavings etc are throughout. This will be fairly expensive. The SEI suggestion above was a good one, $1200 for a brand new drive with three year warranty.
