Found loose part in gear housing

Found this part pictured below loose in my gear housing when I disassembled it.
It is kind of arched on the back and has a lip all the way around that raised area.
It is not on the parts diagram. Any ideas??
The motor hit something and bent the shaft and prop if that helps any.

Thanks, Bo

Pic is blurred. Try again and show some more views. Can't identify anything yet. What engine? What is the length dimension?

Looks like a waterpump key... The flat side goes to the driveshaft and the hump rides in the groove in your impeller hub...

I was thinking the same thing except the water pump key should not be in the gear housing. Probably a key to something else in the gear case.

He doesn't say exactly where in the disassembly process it was found. If the housing was empty and he found it, then it wouldn't be out of the realm to guess it had stuck to something and then fallen in, or was dropped down the exhaust when the pump was disassembled, etc. If it was noticed when the rear carrier was first removed, before the pump was disassembled, then I would worry...

You are right chinewalker. I see it on the other exploded parts diagram as the water pump key.

Sorry, I did not post the specs on the motor. It is a 1994 Mariner 25hp. Glad I did not lose it. Pulled the gear assembly out to prepare it for a new prop shaft, and it was laying right there in the bottom.

Thanks guys, I have never taken a lower unit apart and was a little panic.

look again carefully! my gear house carrier assembly on my 150hp Mariner has a key. I bet yours does too!

OEM part# 30281 on my motor.
