Most of you will probably remember when my boat was stolen then recovered, after my ins paid me for the boat so the ins company kept the boat. Well I'm still looking for a replacement boat and happened to see my own ex boat for sale:

http://miami.craigslist.org/pbc/boa/2228984447.html

I wonder if the new owners will ever know what that boat went through? I can attest that it is in great shape and had the 100hr maintenance done less than a month before it was stolen and they did price it pretty aggressively.

you had the video of them driving off with it right? What did you do afterwards? get another toy? The Old one looks like it handled the situation very well!

OH, you have to go at least take a look at it!

I'd be interested to hear what the seller's story of the boat is.... One owner, little ol' lady from Pasadena, only drove it to church on Sundays

Then you could tell him your sob story, your boat was stolen last year, blah, blah and you have been looking for a replacement ever since. Boy,,, this one sure looks familiar :D

Its about 4hrs away so I'm not going to go look at it, would be funny to hear their story though.

I do not have a new toy yet, still waiting for that perfect deal to come along, want to get a 21' - 24' fully loaded bay boat CC with all the bells and whistles, preferably from someone who has been trying to sell it for a year and can't get rid of it, but so far that plan hasn't worked out for me.

I wasn't in a hurry before since it was too cold anyway, but now that its warmer, I'm a few degrees away from abandoning my plan and spending a little more than I'd like.

The insurance company paid him for the theft. It was recovered and now they own it if they did not sell it to someone else. Or they may have it up for sale.
He was paid for the boat and signed off on it.

There is often no warranty coverage for engines that have any record of being stolen, so I'd be a little wary of that at least.

Re: Found My Own Boat For Sale Today.....(Stolen, Recovered, Now For Sale)

I had a similar thing happen many years ago. Around 1978 I bought a dealer demo 21 ft cuddy cabin with a 228 HP Mercruiser. In 1985 I decided that I wanted something bigger. I advertised the boat for sale in the local newspaper. In a few days a guy came by accompanied by two highly dressed "ladies" and he had the asking price ($8500) all cash in a paper bag. After we filled out the paperwork he hooked up the boat to the back of a big white Lincoln Town Car and drove off. This should have been my first hint of things to come.

In 1986 I bought a 24 foot "weekender", which I still have.

Around 1998 I received a call for the Department of Natural Resources telling me that my boat (the 1978 boat) was found tied up at the dock of a lake house that was being sold at public auction. The DNR officer said they used the numbers on the boat to trace it back to me.

Since the lake is only 20 miles away I drove to meet the DNR officer. There tied at a floating dock under a shed was my old boat. I had not laid eyes on it in around 13 years. Inside the cuddy cabin were several fans, a TV, and the decor looked like a French House of Ill Repute.

The DNR officer told me that the lake house was being sold at public auction because the owner was a drug dealer who got busted. Everything the drug dealer owned was being sold. I think he had several houses, lots of fancy cars, and my boat.

The drug dealer never bothered to re-register my old boat and it was still in my name after 20 years. Yes I signed the title over to him at the time of the sale, but that is as far as the transaction went.

In the end the court awarded my old boat back to me. It ran fine and other than the gaudy decor in the cuddy cabin, it looked just about like it did when I sold it. I think the guy who bought it from me 13 years earlier spent a lot more time "entertaining" in the cuddy cabin than he did operating the boat on the lake.

I sold it soon after the court awarded it back to me. This time I insisted on a certified check, which I got.

This is how I legally sold the same boat twice, 13 years apart. Ironically after over 40 years as a boat owner, this is the ONLY boat I ever made money on.

Looks like a dealer or broker sale to me. No reg numbers common on a Private Party Florida boat?

A lot of people do not realize that until the purchasing party takes the bill of sale and title to the DMV, the boat/car/trailer whatever it is, is still in your name as far as the gov is concerned. I always make two copies of the bill of sale with original signatures and I make a copy of the title after all parties have signed to keep for my records. Then when I go to renew my tags for the yr I verify with the DMV that anything I sold that year is no longer in my name.

In FL its supposed to be impossible to get a tag or registration without the item being in your name, but there's plenty of loopholes.

As far as buying the boat back, I am in the market for a much smaller, lighter, less of a hassle, bay boat. That boat was a lot to tow, clean, store, maintain etc. It was still worth it while I had it, but not worth buying it back IMO. No more walk arounds for me, we spent the night on the water maybe 4x tops, the rest of the time the cabin was just an expensive life jacket holder/useless junk collector.

Sorry if this was already covered in another thread, but I'm dying to know what happened to the sacks of garbage who took your boat?
Charged I hope?

I understand that. I'm all too aware of how this works... ask me how I know:facepalm:... The insurance company either sold the boat to the current seller directly, or most likely, via auction, or the seller is an agent for the insurance company for the purpose of selling the boat. The owner who had it stolen was most likely offered a buy-back at a rate lower than what was paid out to him. Now that it's for sale, he has a good idea of how much less than asking price it cost the seller.

First of all..don't want to hijack the thread, but just had to post...

Of all the boat sales stories I have heard, this one takes the cake! What a great story...:p
