Re: FOUND SOMETHING! CYLINDER NOT FIRING!

Was just thinking, should I do a leak down test? Would that show a burnt valve?

So Buttanic, the difference would be the diameter and height of the spring to compensate for the rotators?

Yes, the rotator is about .100 thicker than a standard spring retainer so the shorter spring is required. A leak down test in my opinion is better than a comperssion test to determine over all condition of the engine provided you have an accurate tester.

when working with keepers,I would have a extending pocket type magnet within reach.

Manual says if air is not available, bringing piston to TDC would work.

Any other opinions?

Re: FOUND SOMETHING! CYLINDER NOT FIRING!

I know rodbolt doesn't approve but stuffing about 2 feet of 1/4" nylon rope in the cylinder and brining the piston up to push the rope against the valves has always worked for me better than air. Just be sure you leave enough rope hanging out so you don't lose itin the cylinder. Other than losing it in the cylinder I don't see where it can do any harm. Using just the piston to remove the spring and keep the valve from falling into the cylinder may work but it will be a hell of a lot harder to get it back together because the piston will not keep the valve pushed high enough to put the retainer and keepers on.

I was thinking the same thing about the re-installation.

When you put the rope in and then move the piston up to push the rope against the piston and valves, what do you do after the spring is reinstalled? Does the rope just pull out? Or do you have to continue to turn the crank until the oiston starts to come down?

Re: FOUND SOMETHING! CYLINDER NOT FIRING!

I have decided to put it back together.

I don't think I have a bad spring based on what I saw last night and I don't feel comfortable removing the springs while the heads are on and the boat is in the water.

I plan on pulling the head(s) when I take the boat out of the water at the end of the season...

Thanks for everyone's help. I will keep you posted on anything new.

Did you closely inspect the flat spring damper inside the springs. A broken damper can take away about 40# at open height.

First when doing the rope trick you don't use the starter to turn the engine. Once the spring is replaced you turn the engine backwards to free up the rope and pull it out

The less than 1/8 turn you would need to loosen the rope to pul it out wouldnt hurt anything

Im at the point you need to hire a mechanic and DO NOT TELL HIM WHAT YOU HAVE DONE.. Let him troubleshoot the problem. Fresh ideas might help. Im not their and there maybe things that you are missing and are not telling us???? You have thrown parts at this thing and the internet is sorta hard sometimes. Might save you time and money? Just a thought. Cause some of the things you do you might not know if your doing them correctly or not?

Re: FOUND SOMETHING! CYLINDER NOT FIRING!

Tony

With all the parts you have checked and/or replaced with no luck fixing the problem I have come to the conclusion the problem is with the ignition switch. Never put the key in there again and this problem is solved. :D

Just joking Tony.

I know this is not funny but we have all had or problems also. I do agree with Trent, it is time to let someone else find and repair the problem so you can actually, instead of eventually, enjoy the boat. You have looked at everything that could possibly cause a problem. Obviously missing "something" somewhere. Good luck bitting the bullet. You gave it your best shot, stayed persistant, and didnt get toooo frustrated. Says alot about you. ;) Again good luck and keep us posted.

I'm not giving up yet!

Just putting it off until I get the boat out of the water.......I have a good idea what the problem is now. It's definitly the #3 cylinder and I'm pretty sure it's not spark related.

Its either bad valve springs or a burnt valve.

I am going to pull the heads in the fall.
