found this weld on my lower end. SERIOUS?

I found this weld on my motor that i got over the summer. it looks old work...just wondering what could have made this crack. It looks like a pro job but i am just wondering what is going on. i know this is a weird question just curious

It looks like it's been there for awhile. Could have been caused by hitting something, are there any flat spots on the unit? I guess it's not that important.

I would say, if it's not leaking water into you gear case, don't worry about it.

Looks like it used to have a whale tail on there at one time. That have anything to do with it?

Looks like the anti cav plate has been stressed and created the crack. Must say if my welder and I had repaired it you would never know. However I agree, if it is not getting worse and there are no water leaks in and no oil leaks out don't worry about it.

That crack look's to be from backward force, such as backing into a ramp with the engine down, or backing into a driveway, or curb stop. My guess would be the case is sprung to some degree. After all! enough force to break the casting.

looks like they replaced the skeg at one time also

Looks like a big beefy weld to me.

If the lower does what it is suppose to I wouldn't worry about it, nothing in that area to worry about as far as water leaking it.

With the cost of a new lower I would certainly use it if it does everything right.

yeah thats what i figured. just trying to tell how he did it...i do agree with R.johnson that at one time it prob bumped into a launch of something backing up.
