Are you sure you don't mean 4-cycle and 2-cycle? I'm not sure I know of any 115 hp outboards with only two cylinders.

never heard of a 4 cyl 115hp. if 4 cycle and 2 cycle, they are totally different engine, and technology.

That's what I thought you meant. Two stroke engines have no valves. They fire each time the piston comes to the top of its stroke. They either use oil mixed with the fuel, or have a separate oil tank for oil to be mixed with the fuel as the engine runs. They can use carburetors or fuel injection, although the latter is only on recent models.

Four stroke engines have at least two valves for each cylinder, like a car engine. They fire every other time the piston comes to the top of its stroke. Lots more moving parts for the valve train. They use oil stored in a sump, like your car's oil pan, for all lubrication. Again, they can be carbureted or fuel-injected.

Two stroke engines are generally lighter in weight for their horsepower ratings. Four strokes are heavier, but quieter in operation, for the most part.

Some folks like one. Some like the other. Both work. Personally, I think four stroke engines have higher maintenance costs and are more expensive to repair when they do break.

Now, tell us what ouboards you're comparing. Year? Brand? That sort of thing.

Hey TD - Doesn't Merc make a later model(late 80s-90s) 4 cylinder 115HP motor? Johnnyrude made 115HP V4s for decades

I'm pretty sure that is a typo, Chris. TD meant that he never heard of a 2 cylinder 2 stroke 115.

Just one example (pretty rare from TD) of a proofreading mistake that completely changes (or disguises) the meaning of a post. Most of the time it is complete lack of proofreading that leaves a post incomprehensible.

Re: Four cylinders or 2

I was looking at 2 115 HP motors on ebay, but 1 was sold. These are just some of the motors i'm looking at. I just ask the wrong question. I just wanted to know what the differance was between a 2 stroke and a 4 stroke motor. No i'm not trying to compare a 150 to a 115 HP motor.

Thanks Buda

Correct me if I'm wrong but the Evinrude Etec 115 are 3 cylinders.
