Re: Four Winns or Rinker

Buy a Searay--I was just at the Searay Delaer and he has a 2002 23 br with an 8.1 Mercruiser 330 hp for $38,000. It was an absolutely awesome boat, has a head on board, well thought out, complete fiberglass construction. If I were buying new this would be my choice, the only way to get a better boat would be a Cobalt and lots more $$$$$$. The dealer here is very good and that can make or break a deal for me.

johnkc, if you are a Merc dealer and a Volvo dealer, why try to sell the Merc first. Why not just give a customer what he wants and not try to influence his choice by your preference? I would guess most buyers don't know very much about either unit and will go with what ever the dealer suggests. Does this mean you are not a strong Volvo dealer?

dldl, if you want it you can have it .and of course there are loyalty issues with merc ,and being a merc platinum dlr, .and if you don't sell much of a product, you can't be a strong dlr for that product.and we don't pretend to be a strong volvo dlr.

Thanks johnkc, I guess brand loyalty with the dealer is probably a bigger issue than which one is better. I've talked to 3 4W dealers and they all push the Volvo over the Merc even though they offer both this year.

I've owned Mercs w/alphas for 16 years and I'm tired of the alpha clunk. I want the next 16 years to be smoooooooooooooooth!

I thnk they both have the cone clutch. Most people tell me the Volvo is smoother and quieter than the Merc. Hey johnkc, you have worked on and shifted both, what's your opinion?

To paraphrase dldl, the Volvo does shift much smooooother than an Alpha. Not sure about the Bravo.

I would question the Sea Ray claim of "no wood". I have toured the Sea Ray plant here in Phoenix twice (it's the parent plant).

There's PLENTY of wood in the boats they build here.

I own a 2000 18' fourwinns. Funny when you said no wood in the construction. When I talk to a Fourwinns sales person at a boat show in Michigan. He told me that there are no wood in a Fourwinns. He also told me that the only wood I could find is under a dash-board. Boy !!!! Was he wrong. I found more wood in a Fourwinns construction then what he told me. Don't get me wrong, I love my boat and I like Fourwinns. But what bother me is the sales people, lie lie lie...

Mattt.

Matt, I agree with you. It's sad that most of the dealers I've talked to know less than I do about the boats they are selling. Just today I had a Chaparral dealer tell me their was no wood in their boats. This was after I had spent only 30 minutes looking at them. I told him that the boats I just looked at had plywood and 2x4's under the floors. All he had to do was open the ski locker and look up. The wood was in plain sight. His reply to me was I'll have to ask the rep next time he's here. They told me there was no wood.

I get the feeling when people read fiberglass stringers they assume no wood. I'm finding out that manufacturers point out in their brochures where there is no wood - not where there is wood. I did call the 4W customer and they told me all kinds of things that are not in the brochure.

Still looking.

No doubt about it The brochures are meant to do only 1 thing. Convince you the buyer, that what they show you is the best you can get. It surely pays to really snoop around the boat and challange the salesman.

Wow !!! This is going to get me all fire up again. Could any one explain to me why do we have to pay for freight and prep when you buy a brand new boat at a dealer ? I didn't ask them to ship it to my house. Do you pay for freight when you buy a tv or clothes at a store ? Nope !!!! Prep, why the hek do I have to pay for prep if I am buying a brand new boat ? Shouldn't the boat be in great condition, clean, running and etc.. if it is new ? They wash and wax your boat for an outrages charge. Dam ##$$$ all these extra cost.... He he he...

Mattt.

djohns19,

I do know that for new car, we also have to pay for freight and prep. Again why do we have to pay for prep ? Shouldn't a brand new car be new ? Oh yeah, this is one of the sales person told my dad. When they prep a car mean, they took of a plastic wrapping for the interior, vacuum the inside, wash/wax, check oil and fluids etc... So you mean to tell me, if we don't pay for prep; They would not check to see if a car is ready for a customer. Shouldn't a car be ready whem it came out of a factory tested and in perfect condition ? I am trying to say is, I didn't order a car or boat. It is right there in a dealer, so why pay freight.

Mattt.

Re: Four Winns or Rinker

I just bought a new car,and got some of the addon's taken off, after an argument. The preprinted invoice sheet added,Document fee, Advertising fee,+ the freight and prep.I refused to pay the Doc.& Adv. fee, and told them not to put their sticker on the trunk.I said you owe me a fee if you leave it on.
