Fractured angle supports for my transom

Hey guys,

The very top of each of my angled supports for my transom are fractured. There are 6 bolts on each of the three supports and the top two bolts on all are in a fractured section. The other four bolts on each are nice and secure to the transom. See the photos. Otherwise I think the transom looks ok and I was not going to replace it. What is your expert opinion on these fractures and if I should incur the cost and time to pull the transom and fix these? Is there an easy but proper fix for this problem? Is this a common issue on old (1965 starcraft starchief) aluminum boats? Any help would be of value. Thanks.

Re: Fractured angle supports for my transom

its a stress crack in the aluminum. I would have the cracks welded up and replace the transom wood if it was my boat.

Actually common to find cracks there. As Scott mentioned above.....have it welded and I would suggest have the braces "thickened" with some 1/8" aluminum. The thickness of the brace material could stand improvement and since you are not building the boats in production there is no need to cut corners.

Thank you for the information. I will have the cracks welded up with some added aluminum plating.

Glad to help.

The only reason I mention you need to replace the wood is it will get damaged during the welding process.
