Re: Frankenmotor?

Pretty much, Ya,... 'n 'bout 3/16" to 1/4" wide,....

Would I be correct in assuming the notches by the bolt holes you can see in the last photo are supposed to be there? If so, what are they for?

Re: Frankenmotor? Risers

Re: Frankenmotor? Risers

I cleaned up the risers last night. Look serviceable?

I got most of the rust chips out of the water jacket (not sure of proper term), but can still hear a few in there when I turn them over - is that OK?

Re: Frankenmotor?

My mechanic says the manifolds/risers are OK. What gaskets do you recommend getting? It looks like OEM are metal, but the mechanic says he prefers "the softer ones". He says gasket part number is 3850496. All input appreciated

Re: Frankenmotor?

Always use OEM and use the latest and greatest instructions...they seem to change over time.

Re: Frankenmotor?

I bought what seem to be OEM as I saw the VP bulletin saying they are now sold as a set of 2 with instructions. They came in VP packaging with instructions and are metal. Mechanic says he prefers the softer ones. I was looking to see if anyone else had come across this choice, and what worked.

Well, the risers worked out just fine last season - thanks to all for the support.

Now, considering she burns oil at the rate of about a quart every (about four) hours, misses when under high load nearer to WOT, and has considerable BLOW BY, we're talking about pulling the engine, and sending it out to be rebuilt (good shops in this area). I trust my mechanic, who WILL pull, and re-install the engine with my son (who is getting pretty good at this stuff). But I am interested in opinions on rebuilding vs. replacing the engine.

Before you do anything, you should make sure you know what is causing the oil consumption. What is your compression? If it is good, could be valve guides although that sounds like a lot of oil consumption for valve guides.

I forgot a few words in previousl post, edited it.

When I asked my mechanic about compression test, he said no need because its obvious to him that it needs rebuild, I believe, due to amount of oil it's consuming, blow-by he's seeing when out running, and hesitation under load near WOT. I said burning oil before, but should have said consuming. I don't see or smell it burning, it's not in the bilge, have seen a little in the water after running (don't like that) - maybe its a combination of things. In the 3 seasons I've had this 1998 Wellcraft 240 se , we've come to find that it was used a lot and maintained pretty well. It has no hour meter, but we figure it's a lot.

Thanks to all for your input and support. A little update, and a question...

Update:
Ended up getting a remanufactured long block that a local machine shop was getting rid of at "close-out" price, as they are getting out of gasoline engines. So we are transferring the goodies from the old block to the "new", and getting ready to install it(hopefully) soon.

Question:
Before the engine goes in, do you think we should replace, or add a back-up, bilge pump?

Re. the bilge pump I'd be inclined to relocate it to a more accessible place, just incase the impeller picks up some debris and needs clearing.
