Re: free boat build

thanks for the support ive been checking out the starcraft builds (thought it was one till i looked better) this gulvit ive seen it on here where i get it? also how good is it?

and another issue to address im considering 2 underfloor options
one the foam and lots of sealer (gulvit)
or two foam insulation 25 inch higher than bottom of floor so compressed when floor is added

which will be better i wanted to do aluminum but that wont happen
and
whats a good finish for the floor i like natural wood and all that but everyone coats it in resin
could i do wood planks safely? like a retro deck? and what would this boat have had stock anyone know?

thanks

Re: free boat build

Wow, what a great project! I did a similar one several years back, just not as extreme. I didn't have to do any gardening, hehe. One thing I did find out was that if your going to keep the cable steering, its very inexpensive to replace the cable and its makes a HUGE difference. I love aluminum boats and only sold the one I had to buy a larger boat. I went to a fibreglass one only because the price was right. When I get through with my restore on it I want to sell it and go back to an aluminum. Have you done any checking on the engine? You want to use a good grade ply for the floor. Something I've learned is marine ply is considered an A/A grade. You can get a good A/C grade from your local lumberyard and put a coat of resin on it. The glue is what makes the difference in the ply and A/C has an excellent exterior grade adhesive between the plys. That should save you alot of money versus paying for the marine ply.

Re: free boat build

I actually got the cable at Home Depot. Mine looked fine but there was a couple of sticky spots when I turned the wheel. I was totally amazed at how smooth the steering was once I replaced it. I think it was around $1 a ft.

Re: free boat build

Just a suggestion....... I would make sure the motor runs first then worry about the steering cables.

That motor is the older Merc and many of the parts may be NLA........ If the motor does not start ...steering is not an issue.

Please go back and re-size your photos to 640 x 480

I applied gluvit to the seams and rivets and then put down 3/4" exterior grade plywood(not treated) sealed with epoxy resin. Then I used marine vinyl over the deck and I am very happy with it.

Make sure you waterproof the wood, 2-part epoxy resin is very durable.

Is it an 18 footer?

If you are using photobucket to post your pictures you can resize through there.

Re: free boat build

got the motor case took off yesterday and looked into it it looks good hopefully more pics soon i was told just run the cracked lines by a guy who saw them it looks like a outer rubber coating to protect a steal warping

also i got a few ideas but was told theyd be heavy so let me know what you guys think i was gonna do a back L shaped seat with a live well/cooler on the opposite the L and also a stainless or aluminum fuel tank with an over under style setup under the motor in the back that would be 12 gal per tank
thanks
