Re: Free Boat From Friend..Looking for info

Honestly i'm praying right now that me and my buddy can lift the motor (370lbs) onto his truck and carry it into my basement..or i can unbolt the power head and we can just lift that off....money is real tight for me this winter so i can't get an engine lift or motor stand to support that weight unfortunatly.

Thats a really nice boat for a freebie!
The trailer looks to be in good shape too..

That should be a fun winter project...congrats!

hah yeah my buddy bought the boat off someone for $2500 and it ran fine for a few days but the steering cable was messing up...spent close to $500 replacing that..ran ok for a few more trips and started having ignition problems. brought to dealer and replaced to correct ignition system $1500 dollars...300 yards from dock after taking it out engine just suddenly stopped for no reason..dealer said they dont do repair work only replace the power head and it would cost him thousands more...so after spending almost $5000 on it he was soooo pissed he just gave me the boat and bought a new one LOL.......and i think i might just be able to replace that piston and be fine...he just didnt wan't the hassle any more.
great for me i guess!!!!

i was going to lay it down in my basement and remove the power head there...otherwise i run the risk of the engine freezing in the next couple weeks and cracking the block and then im really S$%T outta luck!!!

Well...freezing is one thing you won't have to worry about. Outboards drain water as soon as they are shut down; as long as they are positioned up-right.

If for some reason you can't bring it inside, just drain and refill the lower unit (in case there has been some water intrusion into the gear oil...). Then; just fog the cylinders the best you can, and cover it up with a tarp or similiar. Nothing will freeze.

What a deal for free.....doesn't look it's age; that's for sure :)

Most of the guys here are going to tell you that you got a helluva deal, and others would only pass on it because they don't have the right tow vehicle to haul it around. Nice boat and a great price....you are way ahead of the game compared to most.

yah you should be good leaving it on unless you wanna work on it.. i leave mine out after i winterize. and i live right below you . actually the columbian i have that engine has never seen the inside of a barn/house/anything and still works great. gotta wait till spring to start it up tho..

you can make a cheap stand with a couple 2x4s..

yeah thats the thing though..i need to work on the engine over the winter to get it running for spring...have a blown piston and have to tear apart the power head to make sure everything else is ok.

Build the engine stand out of 2x4's. Kind of like a tall saw horse with a place for the transom bracket to bolt to.
You want something secure to hold the motor upright while you work on it.

I used a tree and one of those big ratchet straps they use for strapping cars down to lift my 175 off my boat.

I would at least order the complete power head gasket set.
