Re: Free Boating Magazines
WARNING!! RANT!!

My experience with free trial offers is, don't sign up unless you're about 95% sure you're going to subscribe. They will tell you to allow something like 6-8 weeks for delivery of the free trial issue, but you'll get an invoice for the subscription amount by return mail. If you don't pay immediately, you will get more biliing notices with escalating threats to your credit rating if you don't pay up. If you write CANCEL on the billing notice, you probably won't get your 'free' issue, or they may continue to bill you.

About 10 years ago, I bit on one of these finally got a letter from them informing me they were going to turn my 18 or so dollar delinquent account over to collection and ding my credit rating. I wrote back detailing the events and informed them that a copy of my letter and a copy of their letter was being sent to the Iowa Attorney General Consumer Fraud division. A couple of weeks later, I got a letter saying the sub was cancelled and I was free to keep issues already received.

I guess I'm not the brightest bulb on the tree because I bit again a couple of years ago. The invoice came so fast I think it must have been already sitting in the local PO just waiting for me to snap up the bait. This time I was ready. I wrote CANCEL!! DO NOT BILL ME AGAIN!! signed it, dated it, wrote cc: Iowa AGCFD and kept a copy.

Rant over.
