Re: Free Evinrude 85HP

what years is the 85hp? is it electric shift? if its later than 1972, go for it man, if its electric shift, id say skip it unless you like that sort of thing.

theres a reason they were only made for such few short years. omc's worst idea. sheesh

you can make it shift by applying 12V to the blue and/or green wires going down the leg of the outboard, they are the shifting wires.

voltage to just blue and its in nuetral, voltage to both the blue and green and its in reverse.no voltage to either and its in forward, but it wont start unless there is 12V going to nuetral, it has a safety so you wont start it and chop off your leg. ive owned 3 of them, all pains in the asses! but it wont shift unless the motor is either cranking or actually running. if you apply the voltage while its just sitting in your driveway, it wont do diddly squat.
(my colors may be reversed, im going by memory)

Re: Free Evinrude 85HP

I've had to replace my motor recently, and there was very few to choose from in my area. I decided to try to buy a boat/motor combo and maybe sell the boat seperatly. I looked at a 15' boat that was mint with a 1968 85 horse on it. The motor had no spark, and compression was about 85 on all 4. It hadn't been ran in over 15 years, and I don't think the motor had ever been worked on(paint still on all the bolts) and everything was very clean. The whole thing only cost 1500 canadian which I think is a very good deal. I passed on it, mostly because I din't have any room left to park another boat, and also because I needed the money to buy a good engine.

I still think about that boat and motor. I wonder how much it would cost to fix it cause everything looked like it belonged in a show room. I know compression was low on the motor, but because it was fairly even I wonder if you fixed the lack of spark problem, would the motor run??? I almost looked like there was an altenator on the motor, driven by a belt. Didn't examine it too closely, but I had never seen anything like it before. HOw bad are these motors, cause I still think about buying it and maybe fixing it to sell it, or selling mine.
