A couple of years ago I stumbled over this free downloadable program that calculates the proper wire gauge to use in a given circuit. It is offered by Alden Trull of Belfast, Maine. This marine based program uses your input circuit length and load and calculates the proper wire size. It is easy to use and takes the mystery out of the question "What size wire should I use?".
Considering the marine environment, the program also calculates voltage drop and compensates for the number of wires in a given bundle.
I have the older 2.0 version but Mr. Trull has a newer 3.1 version that contains even more information. It is also free!
My thanks to Alden Trull for offering this program. I highly recommend it for your re-wire project.
