So I came across this free boat; should I take it and fix it up?

13' old (blue hull) boston whaler, hull only.

The transom has already been repaired with diamond plate steel braces.

No title (no owner nearby)

Transom, repaired or not, doesn't seem to be the primary concern with this vessel. For that matter, neither does the title!

Take a look at the port side there HC. If you look close there is a bit of an issue there. Maybe a little crack or delam going on. Nothing a bit of MarineTex and a couple of sheets of sanding paper can't solve! Go for it!

Be sure to start up a thread on the resto section so we can mock, er ah, support ya buddy!:D

I'd suggest smart tabs to fix any listing issues it might have!

I wouldn't exceed the recommended motor size.

Re: Free whaler--worth it?

It reminded me of a Carolina Skiff I once saw outfitted for surf rescue. They kept the transom and bow, and cut off the sides from the bow deck back to a couple of feet from the transom. The battery, tank, etc. were all inside a watertight seat that ran lengthwise to the console, so you straddled it, like a 19' jet ski, and ran it decks awash.

It was interesting, too, to get an inside view of how they are made. I was surprised to find both wood and steel in there in places.

Now that I think about it, I should have dragged it up higher on the beach as a shipwreck ("decorative beach piece") so it wouldn't float back out and be a haznav. Seeing things like that makes you realize that running at night has its risks no matter how well marked your channel is.

Looking closer at the pictures..... a bit of wet sanding then the rest should buff out. As a matter of fact....... according to the new "smartphones" I do believe there is an app for that.

I know a guy here in the Charleston, SC area that "rescues" 13 foot BW's. He currently has three and uses them all. If you do not want it, he will probably come get it. Let us know what you decide!
