Frequent problems starting

Hi guys,

I just got a new boat, and after 1 full day of running fine I am now beginning to have some problems getting it to start. The motor is a 2005 Mercruiser 5.7 MPI, with a Merc B3 outdrive.
When the problem occurs, it is after the engine has been running for a while. When cold, it has started fine each time. When warm, or after an extended period of being off (still warm), it won't start most of the time.
Yesterday I was able to get it started after gunning the throttle a little. When it cranks it sounds like it is about to start but then dies. Then we can usually smell gasoline.
I have had no problems with overheating, and the electrical system seems to be charging fine - judging from the guages. Engine performs well once it is started. I started running it without shutting down yesterday, but that takes a toll on the fuel level.
The previous owner changed out the ignition switch right before he gave me the boat. Not sure if this could be the problem. I am wondering if he wired it incorrectly. Could the fuel pump be running after shut down? I have not heard anything running that shouldn't be.
Also, I transported the boat 800 miles to get it back home after purchasing. Could this be a vacuum issue? Maybe the long trailering shook a vacuum hose loose? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

Re: Frequent problems starting

If it's starting when you give it throttle, it's probably actually running rich. You're actually giving it more air when you open the throttle.

Will it start if you remove the flame arrestor? Do your injectors seem to be dripping when the engine is hot? It could be a bad IAC too...

I'd start with the simple test of removing the flame arrestor, and see if it will start then.
