I,m thinking about getting a boat with a inboard, outboard mercruiser that has fresh water cooling. So does that mean I can fish late in the fall and just drop my out drive and let it drain and be ok? Please be nice guys just a redneck that loves to fish. Thanks

Re: fresh water cooled

What do you have???

Closed Cooling System is what you have if the boat/engine stores and circulates its own water (like a car radiator setup). Only adding this so you get the right attention, and in case you are using search terms to find more information elsewhere.

OR

You have a Raw-Water Cooling System. This is what you have if your I/O pulls in lake/sea/river/whatever water and circulates it for cooling, then ejects it overboard, out prop hub or through the hull via pipes.

Re: fresh water cooled

Dale, It depends on how much of the powertrain is fresh water cooled. Some are block only, and some are block and manifolds. The risers are usually raw water cooled, so they need to be drained, as does the heat exchanger and power steering cooler. The rest may be full of antifreeze, and require no winterizing.
