Re: Fresh Water Cooling

I'd like to know the answer to yj95s question? What do you do with the oudrive intake water if you add a raw water pump?

Re: Fresh Water Cooling

I would say, plug the inlet through the transom, remove the water hose between the bell housing on the outdrive and the transom and just let the water splash up against the transom. I would think you need the water running through the outdrive to help cool the upper housing.

Or you could reroute it back out through the transom with a thru hull fitting and have a steady strong stream of water coming out the back of the boat while running down the river....

Or you could plumb the water to a garden hose in the boat and use the outdrive as a washdown pump, of course only when the engine is running would it work...

I replaced the engine in my 1988 Sportcraft with a "drop in" engine from Mercruiser. The original engine was 5.0 liter with an Alpha 1 outdrive. The new engine was a 5.7 liter and already had a belt driven raw water pump on the engine. I plumbed a 1.25" thru hull fitting for the inlet and bypassed the outdrive pump completely. I called and spoke with a Mercruiser tech who recommended keeping the water pump in the outdrive in order to provide water for colling the outdrive itself. Just cutting the water line so the water has a place to go from the pump.

That's exactly what I did.

I plan on installing a three way valve in the line eventually so I can have a wash down. Haven't done it yet.... that's one of those "when I get the time" ideas. ;)
