Is it ok to take a boat that is normally used in fresh water and use it in salt water? If so, what precautions should I take?

It is not a big deal. Run the engine with fresh water on the muffs after each use, take the cowl off and spray with WD40 or your favorite and wash down the trailer. Been runnin in salt for 47 years.

I agree just make sure your flush engine real well and wash everything down when your come in. Stainless steel fitting and antenna mounts hold up best if you fail to wash everything.

Charlow, You did not say if it was an I/O or OB, or if the change to salt water was permanent. If the change is permanent, make sure the zinc anodes are good, and that the I/O had the cooler (160 degree) thermostat. Hose the I/O motor down every week or so, to keep the steel parts from rusting. You need bottom paint if you plan to keep it in the water.
