Fresh Water Trolling Into Salt Water Trolling Motor

What happens when a fresh water trolling motor is put into salt water? Can it be protected in anyway before putting it into salt water and if not what is the best thing to do to protect it after using it in salt water?

Yes it can be used in salt water, well, at least once.

They don't hold well to salt water, the paint will blister off and the electronics will corrode away. There is no way to prevent, or clean it afterword's to stop the damage.
