Thanks! While you obviously don't understand how to use a sofa boat correctly, the only reason I wrote it was because I was LMAO at your crack about the Lincoln town car and the big ball of string! ;)

Let me know if you're ever down in New Orleans, we'll take one of the sofa boats out looking for that big ball of string. You might even enjoy it!

I'd love to, but would there be room, if you have 12-15 life jackets on board? Should I be worried?

Re: Freshwater boaters who don't ski, wakeboard, or fish?

I have some fishing gear on the boat but have never taken the boat out fishing. I have tube on the boat, and have towed one tuber in my year and a half of owning it.

Me and my friends do a lot more cruising, rafting or anchoring and swimming. As of this past weekend though, I now have two jet skis, and plan to drag those along with the cruiser. Get to the spot, and anchor, set up the grill, chairs and drinks, and then jump on the skis and mess around.

the best strategy for a boater with many uses is to have several boats. Plus the odds are better that one of them will be running at any given time. I see a lot of "first boat" posts where they want to carry the whole gene pool or go offshore (need big boat) and do small boat activities (skiing, flat water fishing, trailering). Counting the boats I share with others, I have about 146' of boats, the biggest being 21'.

I dont understand the fishermen who on a 90* day only fish and troll... Seems booring to me... It's using a boat for fishing rather using a boat just to be on a boat!

Most days we go out to anchor/ swim, but I'm getting back into watersports more now (skiing/ tubing/ Wakeboarding).

Swim, cruise to new spots, and enjoy the peace and quiet.

Agreed. The real solution is to realize each boat has its purpose and if you have the money and space, you can own a boat to suit each purpose. I'd love to own a 30+ cruiser, a 21-24' ski boat, a 20' bass rocket, and a jet ski or two. For now I'll have to settle for the latter 3, lol.

6 ski jackets (assorted sizes) under the port rear sofa seat, 6 ski jackets (assorted sizes) under the center rear sofa seat, and a pack of 4 of the cheap orange Mae Wests under the sun deck. Nice thing about sofa boats and lots of storage, you'll never see them unless you want to do some watersports (or we decide to try something really stupid with the boat).

With my boat I have a tube, and if someone wants to tube I will pull them around. I also have a wakeboard that I can't quite ride successfully, I may give it another go this summer still. I used to fish, but I haven't fished a single time since buying a boat, which most people think is weird. Sure, my boat has carpet, but it snaps out so if I wanted to fish in it I could, I just don't have the desire these days.

I do however swim, cruise, tie-up, beach and visit waterfront restaurants.

Wow, some of you people are really strict! :)

I'm 58 years old. Fishing? Heck, I've fished since I was a little kid. It's okay once in awhile, but mostly boring. Skiing? BTDT and no longer interested.

I like to take a cruise- to Fire Island, an on-the-water restaurant, or to meet and raft up with friends. Day trip or spend the night. Have drinks, have lunch, take a nap if I feel like it, spend hours talking and laughing with people I really like. I can change my clothes, take a shower, or brew a fresh pot of coffee anytime I want.

Lin and I are leaving next Tuesday (in convoy with 3 other boats) for 7 nights- passage through the Great South Bay and up through the Shinnecock lock for a night at the Shinnecock marina. Through Peconic Bay to another marina on the North Fork for 5 nights, then heading home with a one-night stay in Westhampton Beach.

Try that in your center console.

As for the Lincoln and giant ball of string? Well, I drive a 3/4 ton 4x4 pickup... but the giant ball of string sounds kinda cool :D

(my boating friends are going to be very surprised when I tell them how bored we are)

LOL - Interesting to see the "live and let live" attitude along with the "my way or the highway" side by side. I'm the in first camp. I just love exploring and cruising, feeling the hull's interaction with the water, watching the spray, and listening to the motor purr. I also like giving my kid and his buddies their thrills dragging them around on tubes. And, although I never fish, I've found that a well thought out fish and ski boat like the Scout offers great fishing features that translate well to general enjoyment. No carpet to catch crumbs and sand, lots of storage, livewell that makes a really great cooler, and a minimum of fancy and fragile trim and accessories.

marinerailway_top-1.jpg

It was 90 or so degrees on land yesterday. About 11 am I called up my mom and dad and said "Hey, lets go on the water for dinner." We went about 2 miles out into long island sound, killed the motor and had lobster and drinks (nothing too much). We were one of three boats just out there floating around enjoying ourselves.

On the way in, mom and dad decided to sit up front in the bow. Not sure what RPM we were doing, but about 20 knots, sun was setting, motor was purring, watching the water interact with the hull.......I was in heaven. Mom and dad were having a great time talking about where they'd like to go on vacation (which my dad almost NEVER gets time off from work so he doesn't even THINK about it). It was pure bliss. No skiing, fishing or tubing. It reminds me how I need to take them out after work more often. That's what my boat is about.

We like to just go for a ride ,Take the boat where the wind blows.(Not a sail boat).Pack a lunch ,take our Shelty with us and just go. No grand kids to bother us.My wife likes to read and I like to just ride in the boat.We don't fish, I have plenty of fishing gear.We don't do any rafting. Too Old.I like to go to Hacks Point, Georges Point, Cabin John Cove and of course Lloyds Creek. All in Maryland. I like to watch the Eagle fly around and ,The cute little Beach Bunny's.I'll be 70 in October so what else can I do.Sometimes we take the dog for a swim and some times we take our friends for a day cruise. All in a 24 ft Pontoon Boat with a 90 hp Merc.

re: Try that in your center console.

that really wasn't fair. you are describing cruising on a cruiser--a boat you wouldn't use for water sports anyway. The opinions generally center on multi-use open boats around 16-22 feet, and how certain designs have their benefits but also restrict use. Everything you mention can and is done on large center consoles except, typically, sleeping.

It sounds like you have a great trip lined up and the perfect boat for it. I have cruised on a 46' trawler design and a 64' Hatteras (towing a 27' CC thankyouverymuch) and understand the dock-hopping style of boating. My wife always talks about cruising the ICW from Virginia to Charleston--some day we will. It's a lot of fun, and the people you meet are usually great. I know you two will have a wonderful time. Cheers!

I dragged my dad out last night with us with the excuse that I need a spotter for skiing;) He's always busy/ has some project keeping him from boating (retired now), but it was awesome being on the water with him again last night:) Took a picture and had him drive the rest of the night. I encourage him and my mom to take the boat out anytime!

Just teasing, HC- I've gotta remember to use 'smileys' more often.

Yeah, we're pretty excited. First cruise for us and I've been breaking my a** to make sure the boat's ready for it, at the same time trying to keep Linda from cramming so much stuff aboard that we'll look like a Cuban refugee boat!

"Hon, we aren't headed for a deserted island. It's freakin' GREENPORT! They've got electricity and everything..."

I'll be reporting back on all the good and bad stuff in a couple weeks.

Sight see, eat, drink, cruise and sunbathe is pretty much all that happens on mine unless the Admiral is feeling frisky...

And no I don't own an open bow. Take relief in that fact...

always hoping the Admiral is feeling frisky !!! Thats why I own a cuddy cabin !

This weekend will be a repeat of this video, except hopefully much better weather, and no overcast mornings.

http://vimeo.com/15142301
(put together movie trailer style)

I have the 'mothership', a '73 Stardust Crusier 40, which will haul somewhere between 1 and 3 jetskis, camping gear, fuel for the 2 strokes, food and beer for 12 people, but with about 6 on board, 2hrs (or 12 miles, same thing) across the lake for a weekend of camping on a uninhabited island.
Late in the day, a smaller boat will rendezvous with 5-6 more people, who's equipment I hauled earlier.

So, on the rare weekend, I get the best of all worlds, packing everything along with me that I could want, from fleas, to fishing, to sunbathing, camping, having a full kitchen to cook breakfast, a toilet (big deal).

We live in the gestapo state of new jersey and keep the MFG Carefree at Penn Warner Club on a trailer. No fishing, skis or wakeboards for us. Just some nice cruising around and enjoying the wind in our faces. I suspect we will check out other lakes as time goes on.

Re: Freshwater boaters who don't ski, wakeboard, or fish?

Everyone enjoys different things, and that's okay. If you enjoy crusing around the lake, occassionally dropping a line in the water trying to catch fish, that's great. But you mentioned crusing with a "family", I'm assuming you have kids. Sooner or later your kids are going to get bored just cruising around, when they see other kids having a blast being pulled on a tube. And maybe your kids are different than most other kids, but deep down I suspect they're the same (basically). And when they get a little older, they're probably not want to go boating with you anymore because you don't do anything fun with them. I could be totally wrong, and this is just my opinion. I have two kids age 8 and 11, and they love being pulled behind the boat on a tube, or just anchored in a cove so they can jump off the swim platform and goof around in the water. We'll also go fishing, when we're on vacation, where I can teach them how to handle rod and reel, and maybe we'll catch some fish. And there's times when we go out on the river and enjoy cruising up and down looking at the shoreline or city. So to answer your question, we go boating to have fun, doesn't matter what we're doing. And I suspect you'll continue to have fun with your family whatever you want to do.
my kids stayed at the camp gound while me and wiffy went love boating lol

Re: Freshwater boaters who don't ski, wakeboard, or fish?

I'm heading out to do just that today, just cruse around by myself & explore the entire lake. It might be a bit too cold to ski, tube, or board anyway, but I just want a nice relaxing day to myself. The weather here in the northeast were finally getting a sunny day in the low 80's (Thank God) & the wife is taking the 3 year old to the pumpkin patch for the day so I'm free all afternoon. I don't go to this lake very often so it will be quite interesting to just cruse the shore line checking out all the lakefront homes. It's the largest lake in my area, I always go to this small lake 15 min's from my house & it's getting boring looking at the same things all the time. Might toss the rod & box in the boat just for the hell of it, fishing is pretty good here I'm told. I'm not much of a fisherman anymore, maybe once or twice a year at best. Just wanted to tell you your not alone as far as just cruising in the boat, to me it's very relaxing. Had to toss my .02 in that's all.

LOL - that video was fun with cool focus pulls.

And now I know why your name is soggy feet. Man, seeing that wave roll right over your deck on come on inside the wheelhouse was a little unnerving. I take it she's most at home on relatively flat water?

Really cool vessel though. What's powering it?

Anyway, I was just curious how many others there are out there who think along the same lines-or maybe I'm just an oddball... :D

I like to cruise on the open water. It makes me happy. That is about it. Fishing? Remember: fish are friends, not food.
