Re: Fridge not cooling

Thanks everyone. Went out tonight and bought a new fridge. Kenmore Elite with energy star.

I learned something here. I should have stuck to my guns when the idiot tech came out and just put some freon in a fairly new unit. Have had this one for a while and putting up with it - it has never gotten very cold. All those years of frustration and I am sure paying a lot of electric bills.

Oh well - if you aren't learning your not living.

OK, bought new fridge. Now have concerns with the new unit.

How long should it take for a new fridge to get cold?

Factory setting is zero degrees for freezer and 36 for fridge. After 14 hours at 45 degrees for fridge with nothing in it. Ice maker made 4 cubes after about 7 hours then nothing.

Considering what I had with my last one (never worked right) I am gun shy and don't want to be screwed again.

To me that doesn't sound right either. Have you looked at the owners manual to see how long it takes for it to achieve temp? I do know with the newer models that it takes longer to get to temp vs the old energy consuming ones.

Most ice makers need to have the freezer compartment at 10* or less to make ice. Not completely sure how your unit is.

If it doesn't get to temp within 48 hours, I would definitly call and want a replacement and not just serviced. But who knows, the next unit could be bad as well.

Where is the fridge installed? Is there enough air circulation around it to get cooling air where it's supposed to be?

Dont know what year it is, dont know what refrigerant is in it and I doubt its an energy star but my refrigerator is about a 1950 Hotpoint, which makes it about 60 years old, icebox is small and gets frosty but the unit just keeps on working. Near silent all you can hear is when the pump initially starts.

Got its mate to cook on as well, everything works but the clock.

They dont build stuff liek they use too, I had to throw a near perfect 20" HP flat panel monitor the other day because of some crap electronic failure.

Did they install the fridge or you? Reason I ask is the situation I posted earlier. It happened to me. I think the movers got it to far over when moving me in and I didn't wait and just plugged it in.

Yup. If the store delivered it, it's their baby. If you took it home, you might be out of luck.

When you flop a fridge over, the oil that should lay in the compressor gets into the other coils. After it's moved it should set without plugging it in for about a day, then the oil all falls back down where it's supposed to be. If you run it too soon, it'll get hung up in the capillary tube that meters the freon flow. Worse yet, if there's a spec of otherwise harmless debris in the oil, it can permanently plug the cap tube.

Try letting it sit unplugged for a day or two, then try it again. If Sears delivered it, call them and complain, they'll replace it. When the new one comes, don't plug it in for 24 hours.

hope it helps

36-42 is normal in the fresh food section & 0-5 in the frezzer.if the unit wasnt layed down plug it up & within 24 hrs it should be at operating temps.normal temps will be reached sooner but the book states 24hrs.mike243

Re: Fridge not cooling

Went back to Sears and returned it. After 20 hours the temp was still at 46 degrees and had not moved in 6 hours. And that was with no food and no one opening the doors (thermometer with remote sensor)
BTW - temp setting is done from panel and set in degrees - was set for 36 degrees.

Store delivered and kept it upright from what I can tell. They plugged it in. No one ever said anything about leaving it sit for up to a day before plugging it in.

Waiting for the new one to arrive in a couple of days. Keeping the fingers crossed.

HOLLY COW - the ice maker just created it's first set of cubes after 26 hours and a temp of -5 degrees
