I just finished rebuilding my friends starter that was all seized up. Looks good as new and I was of course very careful to put it back together properly. When I went to bench test it it started working, the bendix threw out and it was cranking. However then it stopped working. Is it possible I shorted something out by mistake while testing it?
Thanks
Nigel

Actually it was very easy to take apart and clean. Two hours labor (only cause i couldnt figure how to get it apart, and i lost the ring clip for the end of the bendix) and it was all fixed. New one was gonna be $450. Took it in and had it tested at a shop and i had been hooking it up wrong for testing, duh. Saved some buddies $450, got in real good with the owner of High output sports, and now they're gonna take me for a bunch of sets behind their sweet malibu! Totally worth it!
Thanks for the replies!

Thats what I thought too. Not sure where they are doing their shopping but its for a 340 Monsoon in a '04 Malibu. Maybe they use some special starter? Seemed like a regular old starter to me? Anyways all is good and its working good as new... maybe I'll even be able to go for a Pull tomorrow!

Ayuh,........

Actually,... Marine Rated Starters Are Quite Different than "a regular old starter"........
They are Spark Protected to prevent Fires,+ Explosions aboard Boats,.....
Gasoline Vapors Sink into the bilge,+ That's where Starters live......
Automotive Starters should Never be used in a Boat...........

But $450.00 is just Insane..................

A Brand New Marine Starter for a Chevy, from NAPA lists at $260.........
If you're friends with your Parts Guy,.... It's about $150.........;)
