From Johnson to Merc

I am switching motors from a blown up 1994 Johnson 70 to a late 80's Mercury 85.

I want to use all the controls from the Johnson on the Merc, my question is what do I do about the main wiring plug? Are the wires color coded the same on both makes?

I have the Merc controls but the one on the boat is alot nicer.

The wiring was standardized I think in the late 70's but your not gonna make a direct swap.The shifter won't work and it would be a lot easier to use the Merc.J

You should be able to find a set of controls on Craigslist pretty reasonable, but Jerry's right, the cables won't work.
