FROM KEY START TO PUSH BUTTON!! Evinrude

This is a 1973 Evinrude Elec start. The present key switch has 5 wires. 1 to elec choke, 1 to top of solonoid, 1 to bottom of solonoid and 1 to each coil(2). Is this possible? I have a 2 terminal push button switch. If possible, what would I need to do? I was thinking of also putting a small toggle switch beside the push button for the accessery position in case of no battery and need to use recoil. Thanks!

OK -- so you convert to push button start. How would you stop the engine -- turn the key off? If the key switch works, why are you changing it to push button. What do you need the toggle switch for? Your description of it is not clear. Since this is an electric start engine, running it without a battery is a good way to fry the rectifier.

Re: FROM KEY START TO PUSH BUTTON!! Evinrude

On the battery issue, I am moreless talking about a dead battery in the middle of no where. On this motor, If I want to use the recoil, I have to turn the key to the first position or it will not fire. Like on a fourwheeler with the kill switch off, the starter will turn over all day long, but unless the switch is on it will not start! Thats what I am talking about a toggle switch for, to open whatever circuit is opened by turning the key to the first position. Next, this motor belongs to a hunting club(Duck Hunting) and I'm trying to elminate keeping up with another key. Just get in and go! Sorry so long Thanks

Leave the key in the switch. Chain it down you have to. You are correct that the key has to be "on" to run. Turning it off grounds the kill wire. There's about 300 volts in the kill wire, might be a challenge to a toggle switch and arc out through dirt/moisture. Besides, a toggle switch in the ignition circuit might be a challenge to somebody who doesn't understand it and yanks all day not knowing about the conversion. Just my 2c worth.

I don't know the 1973 wire colors, but you need at least 3 switches:

1. A toggle for ignition on/off, ground wire to kill wire (black and black/yellow on later models), open for run and closed for kill.

2. A momentary switch for starting, 12V battery power to starter solenoid (red/purple to yellow/red on later models).

3. A switch (could be mom or toggle) for choke, 12V to choke solenoid (red/purple to purple/white on later models).

By the way, if I remember right, White to choke, red to top of solenoid, black to coil1, black to coil2 and last wire to bottom of solenoid. Colors may not be original. Some look new.

One of the starter solenoid wires carries the 12V power to the keyswitch...find the solenoid post with the (+) battery cable attached...should be a couple other wires on the same post, one to the rectifier, and the other (should be through a 20A fuse) to the keyswitch. Then the wire to energize it.

Your kill circuit might be different too, but you can figure it out using a continuity tester on the keyswitch.

It's been my experience that silvertip & FR know what they're talking about - but I bought an aftermarket emergency kill switch at Academy Sports and installed it on my boat - it's just a toggle with a lanyard attached, connects the ground wire to kill wire...might be more better sealed than an ordinary automotive toggle or something, but you wouldn't know it to look at it.

course, getting all the club members acquainted with the proceedures could be interesting.

Thanks Alot and yes, the club members can be very thick headed LOL!d:)! Like I said, I may try it, dont know, but if I do I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't going to burn the shop down!d:)! Thanks Again!

Put a deposit on the key. Make it high enough that they don't forget to return it. Or as someone suggested, chain it to the boat. With separate switches it would take two hands to start the thing. One to flip the toggle. then that hand would need to hold the choke switch/button and the third to push the start button. And you are worried about others using the boat??

Not at all worried about others, it was just an idea!! If I did decide to do this, I was thinking of not using the elec choke. It also has manual choke also. The area we hunt is private, but next to public hunting land and we sometimes leave the boat in the water over nite. People will steal anything!! Just an idea!

A switch for on/off and a monetary button for start. I don't see where that's all that confusing. You could even lable them unless you want it more concealed than that.

Heck, you could even put the choke on a monetary button next to the start.

Sounds pretty simple to me. Flip the switch to ON, if cold push start and choke at same time. If close enough you could use index and middle finger on same hand for that. Or put the choke on a flip switch and flip it down once started.
