Ok kids here?s the story:
I blew up a mariner 90hp on my 89? sun tracker pontoon boat. I?ve recently gotten a hold of a 79? Chrysler 85 hp (model #857HE serial # 7908) to replace the mariner. My problem is that the tilt/trim doesn?t seem to have relays like the mariner and also I?m not sure how to attach the steering cable. I?ve attached pics, any help or advice you guys could give for this conversion would be greatly appreciated.

tilt trim is intended to wire directly to a switch. To do so requires big, fat, heavy gauge wire from battery to switch and back down to motor. Put 12 on green and it goes down. Put 12v on blue and it goes up. Black is comon ground. It will smoke and burn and melt and break if you put 12 on both up and down wires at same time or if you ground either of them while putting voltage on the other.

If you do not have big, fat, heavy wire to and from battery then you can use relays. Just make sure that there is no ground output from relay. A 2w relays system will automatically ground unused leads and can create smoke and fire from your trim motor.

Thanks for reply.
The engine is on a stand so I was able to use the wires that run directly into the trim/tilt motor. I held the ground to the negative and when I touched the blue or the green (independently) to the positive, I got nothing. Could the motor be fried?

Re: From Mariner To Chrysler Please Help

from your pictures I would have expected the motor to run.

The 3w motors use full gaskets instead of orings to seal the motors. The good news is that they last a lot longer than 2w seals. The bad news is that the gaskets are way harder to replace than the orings. On the 2w you can just put in new orings around 20 years (about $25) and its almost like getting a new motor. On 3w you may as well wait for it to have problems before fixing.

At any rate, double check the battery and connections. If you are 100% that the motor is getting juice but not spinning then it is an internal problem with trim motor. Problem is that the 3w motor uses gaskets. If you open the motor then it will need new gaskets. I usually have to fully disassamble the motor just to clean off the old gasket debris and prepare the surface. Having a watertight seal is critical. There's no such thing as a $25 set of seals on a 3w and even a quick peek inside usually ends up taking an hour to properly reassemble. Based on your pictures a rebuild is going to cost you right at $100 - most of which is for new seals. So check the electrical connections again. Make the battery is good and the connections solid. If it still doesn't spin then you have no choice but to go inside the motor.

I defiantly don?t have a motor that works. I?ve checked and rechecked the battery and connections. I?m sure it?s a bad sign that I can lift the motor by hand with no resistance from the trim system. Any advice for finding parts for this old of a unit?
