Frozen Bolt Problem and Repair

Hi Folk,
I'm rebuilding a 1984 Evinrude 15. I had to pull the power head to replace the upper thrust bushings. In the process of unbolting the powerhead I (you guessed it) broke on of the bolts. I soaked the stub in penetrating oil, heated it up, cooled it down and repeated for several days....no luck. Eventually resorted to the drill motor and proceeded to get most of it out. So my question is.....can i use JB weld to refill the hole and drill/tap new threads or should I have someone welt some new aluminum in there. It's one of the corner bolt holes (rear, right side looking from the top of the motor). Any advice would be most appreciated. Thanks!

Have you looked into buying a helicoil kit? Not much to it as long as they make it in your bolt size. They sell for about $40 at auto parts stores. I just did one on a head bolt I broke on a suzuki 85 hp.

Take a pick and get the remains of the old bolt out. Then you can heicoil it, take it to a machine shop and have it welded and tapped or if you want to use JB weld use Gray Marine Tex instead.
