I have a 6.5 hp evenrude that i let sit too long apparantly without turning it over. Now it appears frozen, unable to rotate. I have put marvel mystery oil in the spark plug holes, set overnight but no movement possible. Any suggestions?

Re: frozen outboard

Hi Jim,<br />If you can still buy a head gasket for it.<br />Remove the head, remove the recoil starter if its a top mount one. Get a piece of pine wood that will fit down the cyl bore.Place it on the piston and smack it with a hammer.<br />The wood that is.While turning the flywheel<br />with a strap wrench in the same direction that the piston wants to move, try both cyl.<br />IF THE PISTON IS AT TOPDEAD CENTER THIS WON'T<br />WORK.<br />Regardless the cylinders will need to be honed and new rings put on the pistons. To make the motor run the best. IF they stuck<br />because of condensation you may be able to<br />run it by useing double oil for 1 gal gas.<br />then back to your normal mix.<br />BTW how long was to long :> Storage seal the baby next time todays fuel has alcohol in it<br />which washes the oil from the motor absorbes<br />water and causes your problem. Your not alone<br />...have fun...corm

Re: frozen outboard

try some pb blaster and take you time with it i have unfroze 3 9.5s like this. just spray the plug holes really good and try to turn the flywheel by hand back and forth it might take a few days but it will come lose. just keep it sprayed and keep trying to turn.if it starts to turn and stops just spray it up again and let is sit dont try to spin it over all in 1 shot u might break a ring. just take your time.

Re: frozen outboard

There are good suggestions here but DO NOT use a block of wood and SMACK it with a hammer. Thats a good way to break rings and ring lands on the piston. It will take a few days for any penetrating oil to loosen things up. The key here is patience. Lay the motor such that the plugs face upward introduce the penetrant. As was suggested, try to turn the flywheel just a little at a time and in a rocking fashion. Using force when things are not loose enough will break things. When the flywheel can be turned ever so slightly, that's a sign things are loosening up. Apply more penetrant and let it sit a couple of days. Repeat this process and over time the engine will again spin freely.

Re: frozen outboard

Back and forth is right (works for me). Also tilt the motor up,or lay horizontal on the floor,so the penetrant can get to 360 degrees of the piston/rings.Use a wrench on the flywheel nut to turn back and forth, worry about the waterpump impeller later. If the nut starts to unthread, you're turning too hard. When you get it running, spray some 50:1 into the carb,to get lube to the crank and bearings ASAP.<br />6.5 HP must be pre 50's,but the mechanics are the same.<br /><br />DHP

Wonder if he's still muttering <br />'Turn clockwise ... spray ... anticlockwise ... spray ... clockwise ...etc?'<br /><br />Should be freeing up by now!

Re: frozen outboard

try not to use a wrench on the flywheel nut that is a tapered set and is supose to be torqued. try to just use your hands on the flywheel or not then use a strap wrench but u dont wanna use too much force just give it time and soak it. it will free. time time time if u dont give it time u will break it. by time i mean maybe a week or 2 of spraying and playing with it back and forth.

Re: frozen outboard

I have done this to more then a few chainsaw's and outboards. :<br /><br />1. Remove Starter if located above flywheel<br />2. Remove Both spark plugs<br />3. Spray Liquid-Wrench or WD-40 in the cylinders<br />4. Take a breaker bar with a socket and gently work the flywheel back and forth. If the nut loosens up try turning the breaker bar clockwise.<br /><br />95% of the time this works. The only time this hasn't was on a 1969 Johnson 6hp that the head was missing and water had rusted the inside of the block completly. Then the other day I was working on a 1949 QD-10 that a guy gave to me because the shops told him it was frozen and should be thrown out. In this case the engine was not frozen but someone had ran the motor without gear lube so the lower unit was seized. I sprayed Liquid-Wrench thru the fill screw and tried a breaker-bar on the prop shaft. That did not work so I pulled out the big guns. A Craftsman 1/2" Air Impact Wrench. To my suprise that worked without damaging anything and now after installing new points and of course gear lube the FREE 1949 Johnson 10hp runs great!!
