I have a 40 hp evinrude 1989 model. Occasionally in the cold climate here in Reno I get to the lake and find that somewhere in the system a line has frozen up. It usually clears within 30 seconds but I am afraid it might overheat. Upon leaving water I raise and lower at least 5 times trying to get all the water out. sometimes works but sometimes doesnt. Any comments would be appreciated.

Re: frozen pee hole

the frozen pee hole is nothing to worry about... it is only a tell tale..

the fact that it cant tell you anything...might become an issue if you ahve over heat issues...but the frozen pee hole wont cause overheat issues!!

the large passages inside the cooling system in the motor all drain well..... and seldom is there freezing water issues there....

it is good to have a temp gauges on your motor...lets you know what the temps are...gives you more specific information...you can overheat even if you have a fantastic peeee stream!!

Re: frozen pee hole

It's not a "pee hole". It'called a tell tale. I find it more than a little offensive to see that in writi.g. Wish the mode could find a way to encourage posters to use the correct terminology.

As stated, it's a "tell tale". If your system is working correctly, your "Hot" horn will go off with an engine overheat..

Re: frozen pee hole

:eek:A frozen pee hole? sounds painful:eek:

Anyhow, if it is frozen, then it should thaw rather quickly, once the motor is warmed up. You might also want to check it out good and make sure all obructions are clear, once it is thawed. A clear "pee hole" should drain good enough to keep from freezing up.

As an avid "ex" waterfowler. I can add this.

ALWAYS keep the Lower unit submerged. DO NOT tilt it up in freezing temp's. If you have to run shallow: "getting in" submerge the L/U once you get there.

I got quite the laugh out of this one!

He would find my "terminology" extremely offensive when removing a stuck/corroded TNT pin ;)

He should come down to South West Fl and find out what kind of "terminology" we use when working on salt water mtrs. By the way, we call them Pi$$ers down here.

I've turned wrenches for the better part of 25 years-cars, trucks and diesel locomotives.

What we call one thing at work isn't necessarilly what we would call it at home.

Try to remember that this is a public forum, and not a locker room. Would you like to have your wives and children read what you post here?

Myself, I'm embaressed to see what is contained in this thread.

Like before, please mods, try to clean it up around here. It is a public forum.

Ok everyone relax a bit, were all friends here. But were not all "professionals" here, and many of us know the "tell tale" by its alternate name because thats how our daddies called it and their daddies called it. Nothing disrespectful intended. No one is swearing in here, just calling something by its common name. Now, we dont have to say it for sake of saying it, and can be grown up about it. Honestly though a good percentage of marine motor terms can be said tongue in cheek. Just be mature.

I have to say, it is the parent's responsibility to be careful about what their children read and watch. Otherwords, don't get all nutty with the cable companies, because your kids watched an episode of Beavis and Butthead. LOL:D

Myself, I got a chuckle here too. Especially what bob johnson wrote.:D

Re: frozen pee hole

Thanks boobie. I don't mean to be harsh or anything, but I think we all can agree that we are a pretty good group of guys here and very willing to help others out. Sure, we're sometimes a little bit "off" on our terminology, but in the boating world, I think it's safe to say, "we're sometimes crazy, in a good way" :D

There is a lot of good, experienced guys here who have offered a lot of great advice and helped a lot of people out. Personally, I like being a part of this forum and it's the better one that I've been a part of. Being an avid Anitique Outboard Restorer and Outboard mechanic, I still have learned new things here.

Hopefully, bobjoe1 has found the help he needed to fix his "frozen peehole" or pi$$er:D
If not, all he has to do is come back for more help.
