Trying to free up cylinders on vmax 175 not winterized last year.
Using PB blaster have motor in horizantal position. The flywheel is stuck, my question is...do I need to pull off the lower unit to make sure that is not locked?
prop does spin in neutral

thanks

If the prop will not spin then the lower is pobably locked up. This will prevent the power head turning.

Keep using the blaster, and you will need to get a wrench or socket to turn the flywheel nut, sorry SD but I'm not positive on the size, it's going to be the metric size of the 1 1/4 I believe. Be patient with the blaster, let it soak for a couple of days if need be, but do not force it.

I have a 225 mariner that had water in the lower unit and i didn't know it but it had froze at some point and burst the gearcase slightly. The lower unit was seized up but I got it loosened up.The powerhead also got locked up so I'm guessing the drive shaft is locked but not the prop shaft.

Sorry, I missread your info. The lower can be locked up and the prop may still turn.
To be sure, pull the lower unit. I have had one dt140 that had that problem.
If the head is still locked up be sure that there are no mechanical devices for start in gear protection that are incorrectly aligned. Dont know your particular set up. If you are still locked up Use liberal amounts of Marvel Mystery Oil in each bore and open the throttles and shoot a bunch down into each throat. Let it soak for a couple of days and try turning. It could take a while for the oil to do its job but it can work

It won't hurt to pull the lower, but if the prop spins, I don't think that's your problem. PB Blaster is good, but get some Marvel Mystery oil and really dump a bunch of it in there. Be aware that even if you get the motor to turn over, chances are that most of the rings will be stuck and the motor will not have good compression.
