It may be noisy but we love this air-cooled outboard because it's so light and perfect for several of our smaller "toys"...especially canoe and homemade cat. We haven't used it for probably about a year and when we just tried to start it, found that the throttle is frozen (handle will not turn). We're not exactly mechanically inclined but are willing to give it a try. (Motor is old enough that it's difficult to find anyone who wants to work on it...or if they're willing, would charge more than the motor is worth). Hubby has managed to take off some of the gadgets on the handle but we still can't get the handle to turn like it's supposed to. The Engine starts and runs fine but we can't turn the handle (throttle) and get the prop to turn. We've gotten the rubber handle grip partly off but it doesn't look like that part has anything to do with it. Hubby also got the throttle to somewhat work by fiddling with the flat "nut" that seems to attach the cable to the mechanisms on the handle. Would really appreciate any suggestions on what to do.

Thanks!!

Sandy T.

First you need to try to determine what part is stuck. It isnt likely the whole thing. If it uses a cable from the handle try unhooking it and check to see if the handle will turn.If so then try to determine what other part of the throttle is stuck.Carefully try to operate the mechanism from vartious points of its parts and carefully observe the components to try to tell which part or parts are stuck.More than likely there is only one pivot or slide that is the problem.Of course you need to lube all the parts to be sure they move freely.Use WD40 to help loosen things up.Then lube with a light spray grease.Be carefull not to force things as some parts may be brittle.

As near as we can figure out, the grip handle itself is what's stuck. We've had the whole throttle mechanism off the handle and sprayed lots of WD40 on everything. Still haven't gotten the handle to turn. We have been able to use the connecting nut to advance the throttle but I'd much rather figure out how to repair it. Any more suggestions appreciated. Are there any repair manuals for these outboards? (We've got the owner's manual and it's not much help)

Sandy

Keep in mind I dont know what the assembly is made like so my advice is kind of generic.
A manual may cover how it is assembled but not much on repair.Generic manuals covering many brands in one are available some right here on iboats.others on eBay or amazon.com and others.
The library may have manuals as well.Try to determine if some trauma may have jammed the handle. Try carefully taping the handle.Put a hammer one one side and tap on the other Be careful as these parts may be pretty brittle. Also try to tap outward and inward on the handle. If there is a outside sleeve you might try drilling some small holes so you can spray some lube in.
