I am doing floor repairs and I would like to know if anyone has used or experimented with frp wall panels. Specifically from glasteel. I did a search and found no mention of it. I have been researching this and the one thing i am concerned about is if i can successfully Glue carpet to the top of it, and will poly resin bond to it. The people I have spoke to that have worked with the product in construction, and a few Home Depot employees, have never used it in an outdoor application. The glasteel tech sheet shows that independent testing determined that it did not show uv damage when tested although that is not something that was necessarily designed to withstand. But I think for comfort I would want to cover it in carpet though. What are your thoughts?

Re: FRP panel?

It says its made from polyester resin, so with the proper prep, it should bond.

It also says it for "indoor use only"......

Any reason why you dont want to use ext grade ply and csm/resin, since youre carpeting anyway?

Re: FRP panel?

If it,s the same stuff I sometimes use at work it's made for wet environments so I don't think it would just fall apart or anything . Are you planning on gluing it on top of a wood deck? It has a slick surface so if if you put carpet over it You would need to scuff it up . I am thinking it would not be the best choice . Just my .02 cents ..

Re: FRP panel?

FRP is:

1. An interior vertical wall finish designed to be applied over durable substrate like sheet rock or plywood. Since it is a vertical finish, it isn't designed for horizontal load bearing.
2. Very thin, at .09" thick it's less than 1/8" thick... less than 3/32" thick.

3. Very expensive for the thickness, @ $33 per .09" thickness it would cost $275 for a 3/4" thick sheet.

This product is not structurally or economically feasible for boat construction.

Re: FRP panel?

I was thinking about about cutting my floor pieces to size, coating all sides with a thinned slow kicking poly resin to seal, then sanding the top to abrade, gluing the frp to the wood. Then seal/bond the edges to the hull after installing in boat. Then glue carpet to the top. My thinking is the wood is the base structure and the frp is water proof barrier with the added benefit of a strengthening layer of plastic/poly/fiber. Then carpet for the comfort appearance aspect.

It would be less expensive to just use Fiberglass mat and resin to cover your plywood and seal it properly.

Re: FRP panel?

Yep, I see NO benefit using the FRP the way you describe. The resin and glass with wax in the final layer will seal the deck great!!! Scuff with 80 grit, wipe down with Acetone and apply the glue and carpet. Done!!!!;)
