Re: Frustrasted with stator

Chuck,
Did you get a OEM stator or an aftermarket one? I put on a CDI stator this summer, it had the wiring switched around in the plug that goes to the power pack. That would have nothing to do with your problems but it showed that it wasn't checked out very well at the factory. It did wok fine after I switched the wires around, but it gave me a good reason to buy OEM parts from now on. I was able to diagnose my bad stator with an OHM meter, and the new on tested within specs with the OHM meter. So I guess you might have 2 bad stators, I've bought bad new parts before.
Goodluck,
Brian

It's a CDI from Seiler Marine. I saw a post where someone recommended them and they are close to my part of the country. I did email him about it testing the same as my old one. He said he had never had a bad one come back.

Your right if the wires going to the power pack were switched it doesn't run. I replaced my stator because it wouldn't charge, with the new one on it wouldn't run. Took alot of pulling hair out and calls to CDI tech line, but I finally figured it out on my own. The people at CDI were very polite, I would call them up and see what thay have to say. The CDI website is www.rapair.com

Silly question, but are you checking the AC voltage with the motor running? If not, it needs to be.

Yes I am.

Let me run this by you guys. When I originally tested everything the stator ohms across the yellow wires was the only thing that I could find wrong. I thought my meter was the problem but I tested with 5 different meters including a very good meter at my work place. It would definately read on the low ohms scale.

Based on this I ordered the new stator. As soon as I received the new one I read the ohms on it with the same dead short reading. It wasn't returnable so I put it on anyway(at Mike's recommendation). This brings us up to the point where I am now, no voltage coming from it. Mike at Seilers Marine insists he has never had a bad one out of the box. Even CDI's own tests instructions say there should be voltage of 8-24 volts measured and if not they state it's usually a stator problem.

It seems Mike was taking the position that if it didn't have voltage it was due to another problem or the related problem cause the new stator to fail. Had I not tested the ohms before I put it on then I would have to go along with what he says but I did test it. CDI says it should read 100 ohms where as the manual says .25 ohms.

How would you guys proceed here?

Could someone also tell me once and for all... Is the DVA really something different than a peak hold function?

Chuck, one thing you need to try is unhooking the regulator from the terminal strip then test th output of the stator. Might be a grounded out regulator?

Just went out and tried it.

You are a freakin genius Brian! It showed voltage. Still strange though, I did not get a dead short on rectifier tests. I am going to do it again though.

Chuck,
My manual doesn't have any kind of bench test for the watercooled regulator. Just running output tests. Do you know how big the altenator is on your motor, 9 or 35 amp?

It's 35 amp. The bench test was from CDI

I did Joe's test for tach/rectifier. The tach didn't work jumped out either so that indicates bad tach, correct?

Chuck,
Thats what I'd guess. To test the regulator you need a known good tach. Too bad your not close by, I've got some large air cooled rectifiers that could be used to test with.

The same signal that drives the tach also drives the "no oil" circuit. If you don't have a signal for one the other will also not work. Both attach to the gray wire leading from the terminal block, normally connected to the rectifier/regulator. Check the no oil alarm when unsure of the tach.
