I noticed that my prop shaft has a slight bend in it and after doing some research found that it is bad too run that way.
Well I need a special tool to remove the bearing carrier assembly in order to remove the shaft.
Anyone know where I can find one of these tools? It is for a Merc '89 25hp. The tool number is 91-93843--1. Or any tips on getting this thing off. I tried using the thrust hub assembly and a vise grip and ended up breaking off one of the "lips" on the carrier And Yes I do realize that it's left hand thread
I do have a manual and also access to an online service manual. According to the service manual, I need a special tool that locks onto the carrier assembly (castle nut looking thing). I did try reversing the thrust hub, however the thrust hub isn't sided it's round, so I tried using a vise grip and rubber mallet. That didn't work. It didn't budge. I followed the manual which says to remove three screws from inside the shaft housing and then unscrew the carrier (left hand thread). I don't know, I'm about to give up. I broke off one of the lips of carrier. Anyone know how much (labor)it would cost to take this thing off?

Re: Frustrated.....pulling prop shaft.

i hit something years back and bent the prop shaft on mine(not too bad just slightly) and i had one heck of a vibration from it. thought i would have to change out the shaft. a neighbor (an old do it yourselfer) took a look at it and with a pair of vise grips and a clothes hanger and a good hammer straightened it out and you could not tell it had ever had a bend, and no vibrations could be felt. ran it that way for another 10 yrs before selling the boat and my friend who bought it hasn,t had any trouble with it either. if it is slightly bent ( and it has too be slight ) you could try to straighten it instead of replacement. remove the prop, put the nut back on, clamp a cut piece of heavy wire to the foot, bend the wire in a way that it points straight back into the shaft end (like in a "U"), turn the shaft so you can see where the bend is, tap on the nut on the side, spin the shaft, continue this until the shaft is straight (adjusting the wire as needed to locate dead center.
when done the wire should be pointing at the dead center of the shaft end.
it worked on mine and i have heard of others doing this also. this may work if you haven't torn it down or damaged anything yet.

His fix might work ,but also when striking a shaft with a hammer suported by bearings, you can flat spot the taperd bearings and cost yourself more money in the long run.
Just my 2 cents
Rich

WHAT!!!!

I started reading this and the more I read the more it sounded like the same problem I had......even more that I read I realized that it's MY post... WORD FOR WORD.

HUH

at any rate I wasn't able to get it off and ended up bringing it to a local marine guy. I haven't heard back yet, but I was able to get a used replacement "kit" on ebay (gears, roller carrier, shaft, bearings, thrust hub, and prop nut) for a Benjamin.

wellcraft89 is right, hitting the shaft can damage the bearings if you are not careful (and could possibly even if you are), having a shop perform the repair for you is more than likely cheaper than buying the tools to perform the repair yourself (which you would only use once), trying to straighten the shaft is only a suggestion to be thought over before trying, although i have seen it work, it does not mean it is a proper repair procedure.
