I have a 1976 Johnson 115 v4. Does not like to run at slow speeds. Just overhauled carb's and installed new surface gap spark plugs. I can hear a cylinder dropping out at idle or trolling. Also like's to sneeze thru carb's before it die's and idle's rough. Could the surface gap plugs have any thing to do with that? Run's great wide open!! How can you test a coil? Maybe replace them? Thanks!!

Re: Frustrated

Posting this is the correct forum will probably get you some answers....lots of really good Johnny/Rude guys patrolling the repair forum.

I am not an expert, but I would just use the standard champion plugs that are recommended for that motor instead of the surface gap plugs.......... 77jc4's I think.

Re: Frustrated

Johnsons--OMC--use a QL77 plug which is NOT a surface gap. That could be your propblem right there.

Re: Frustrated

Problem could also be wear in the plate under the flywheel that moves with the throttle to adjust the timing.
