Ok, so I am in process of painting my fiberglass boat. I started by sanding, then did a ton of epoxy work on holes and such, then sanded with 50, then 160, and then 300. Cleaned with the rcommended solvant, and then put on the first coat of Red using the roll (closed foam roller) and tip (with a good brush) method. Sanded with 300, Cleaned with solvant, and then did a second coat, Did all the one more time and The paint has covered everything, but you can see the brush marks and it is just not as smooth as I thought it would be... Can I expect this paint to be as smooth as a cars paint job? or is it not going to come out that sheen and nice? Is there a finishing step I am missing? Do I need to sand with 1000 and use rubbing compound? How do I finish this paint job to make a mirror finish??? Help!!!

Did you thin the paint out? Depending on the type of paint you used, the brush marks may not lay down. Paints have many different additives in them to allow them to keep a wet edge longer, to have the ability to self level, hardeners, etc. No two paints are necessarily alike. You can add thinning agents and get different results depending on what you use.

I did not use any thinners, just straight up Fire Red interlux Brightside Paaint. Should I have thinned?

possible, and a spray on clear coat gives the real shine. has to be compatible with base paint.

That is why I desided to spray mine. I just can't imagine rolling and brushing would compare to an automotive finish. I have never tried it and don't plan to. I am able the spray mine.

Anyway -
There is a brushing solvent made for it.
You may try thinning the paint with it.
Sand an area and try it. Maybe just the transon and splash well area.
Somewhere you can stop. Thin the paint, I think the label on the can recommends how much, and re-paint that area. I think it depends on what type of brush you use also. Check on that, I forget what is recommended, china or something. The brushing is dry brushing. You are just trying the level things out not adding paint with the brush.
With thinner paint it should level out better.
But getting to an automotive quality finish....?????

The brushing thinner is Interlux 333. I normally do it 80/20 for the first coats and thinner for the final coat. Others have used 90/10.

I have used both Petit Easypoxy and Interlux Brightside and I have personally gotten better results from the Easypoxy.

I'm pretty sure you want to thin it 80/20 ( paint/thinner ) for better flow/coverage. If you are putting on multiple layers of paint, it's always best to do lots of thin layers instead of a few thick ones...it's almost a golden rule of painting.
