What fuel and oil mixture should I use for an older Mercury engine that hasn't run for at least a few years?

As far as I know it is in decent condition.

Thanks for your reply.

Tim

Re: Fuel and Oil Mixture

Normally a ratio of 50 parts fuel to 1 part oil (TCW-3) would be good for this type of engine. With older engines or when breaking in an engine I'd drop that to 25 to 1.

If you get too much smoke - or don't care for it much then look at ashless oils instead of the standard TCW-3.

Your manual may say to use TCW or TCW-2. TCW-3 replaces these.

=-bayman

It's probably more commonly known as smokeless come to think of it. One of my local dealers usually sells Sierra smokeless for between $5 and $6 per quart. Not to push any particular product - that's just what they usually have in stock. I'm not sure if any particular brand is better than any other.

Re: Fuel and Oil Mixture

if it hasn't started in a few years it might be a good idea to take out the plugs and squirt a little oil into each of the cylinders and let it sit over night and then the next day squirt a little more oil in each one and pull the engine by hand a few times if it is electric start, if its pull start just give it a few slow pulls to circulate the oil a few times, this is the minimum I would recomend if it turns over and starts well it would probobly be a good idea to check/replace the impeller, lower oil, spark plugs, carb clean basically give it a decent tuneup....good luck
