Fuel Bowl Filter Replacement ('64 Evinrude Fastwin 18)

Trying to replace the screen/filter in the fuel bowl. I have the right part number (verified) but, it seems to small in diameter to fit over the nipple. I've tried spraying with oil and heating with a hairdryer with no luck. I can get it up far enough on the nipple then have the bowl hold it in place but that seems wrong.

Also, is it possible to replace the bowl/screen system with an inline filter? Just asking as it seems feasible to me. Thanks for any and all comments/help.

bravo11, I have to say I have no idea what you're talking about. So I tried to look up your engine and seem they stopped in 1968. So take some pictures and post them on here so we can see what you see and are dealing with. Then we can offer suggestions for your problems...

Thank you Admiral for responding. Its a 1964 Evinrude Fastwin 18 Hp, model 18402. If you look at a schematic (marineengine.com) on the left or port side of the power head there is a fuel bowl with a filter. Inside or above the bowl is a nipple that this filter is supposed to fit onto. The two filters I've tried will not. If necessary I will take photos and post. I've done so much detail work on this motor but, as usual, the small stuff is what kills you. Fixing this one up to go back on a 1965 MonArk aluminum boat (with deep family ties). I appreciate your help and hope to hear from you.

bravo11, I look forward to the pictures because I like folks refurbishing the older engines and boats. We just need some type idea what you are asking. And like I stated, my source of diagrams only go back to 1968 models. So I need some pictures to offer suggestions... :thumb:

Here is a parts diagram. A filter is shown as part #35

The OMC part number for it is 0308239 - FUEL FILTER - SMALL

You certainly use an in-line fuel filter if you prefer. Most any auto-parts store or small engine shop could supply you with one that would fit your fuel line. Bring a sample of your fuel line when you go shopping.

If the 308239 filter does not fit....then perhaps someone in the past has altered the assembly somehow?

Those nylon type filter just push on to that filter housing and you are done.
