Why are boats fuel capacity given in ranges? I have looked up boats just to look what's out there and find that the capacities are given in ranges like 12-18, 20-25, 22-30 and so on. I know how much my starcraft holds, so why the range? Just curious ! :)

I believe (really assume) that while with a car...There are set constants..
Speed limits...paved highways ectera where they can nail down your gas mileage...

On the water...Conditions change..heavy headwinds affect your GPH usage so thus your range...Rough seas...same thing....Just too many variables to say exactly this many miles per tank...perhaps 25 miles in ideal weather & load conditions....down to 15 in bad weather/heavy loads

CheapBoatKev, 1960VW is talking about how many gallons the gas tank holds.

Lots of the "boat for sale" sites (Ebay, etc) have a general description box, then use a standard computer form that the seller just clicks on a button for gas tank size, engine type, etc. So the only choices you get are the 12-18, 20-25, 22-30 that you are seeing.

Places like Boattest.com (free if you give them an email address - use a free one) give you the actual capacity.
