Fuel coming out front of carb????

I have a 1986 30 horse evinrude (Electric start/Tiller) that i got in a trade. I just got around to trying to get her running as the previous owner said "it ran...but needs carb work or something". Well, first thing i found was the coil wires were reversed because it was backfiring when i would turn it over . Next, I removed the carb to do a rebuild/cleaning. When I got it off I realized that the (Venturi?) tube from bowl to carb top was split/bent as if someone attempted to remove it. Fortunately, I had a spare motor so I had another carb. After replacing the carb I used a spray bottle with fuel to ensure it runs and it does. However, when I plug my fuel line into the motor and squeeze the bulb gas flows out the front of the carb. I can see that it comes straight up from the (Venturi?) main tube from the bowl to the carb top. With the amount of fuel coming out the carb I never tried to fire her up. I have checked the float needle tip and it is like new. I also adjusted the float. Nothing changed...fuel steadily flows out the front of the carburetor. Where do I go from here? Any help is appreciated and thanks in advance.

I would check that float again. It may have some debris in the valve seat that won't allow the valve to fully close. When you adjusted the float, did you turn the carb upside down and adjust it paralell with the carb body?

The float valve is probably not working correctly and should be replaced. Be sure to use the clip between the float arm and the needle. The kit is part # 396521, available from your BRP parts dealer.

BTW, the tube within the tube running from the float bowl to the carburetor throat is supposed to be offset; if you straighten it, you will ruin the carburetor.

Yeah, I did the upside down/parallel adjustment.....giving an inch measurement from bottom of carb base to top of float. It was actually just about dead on anyway. I cleaned and used compressed air to clean all orifices...but yeah, im thinking the little float valve/clip might need replacing. Even though it looks like new?? I'll pickup a float kit and see what happens. Yeah, I know that the venturi has a bend....I just don't know what the previous owner was trying to do. It's obvious someone broke/cracked it....before our trade... Anyway, I've heard her run so I know I'll get her up and going. I'll keep ya'll posted and thanks.

Before you assemble the carb and reinstall, turn it upside down and blow into the fuel inlet, it should not let air through. If you can't blow through it then you know your needle/seat are sealing and it's something else.

Re: Fuel coming out front of carb????

Thanks for the help..I installed a new needle and seat valve but again, with the carb upside down I could blow through it. I had already meticulously cleaned and rebuilt the carb so I came up with another idea. I forgot I had a 35 hp Evinrude mid eighties parts motor. Fortunately, even though it had the electric choke (primer solenoid) I was able to use the carb on my 30 horse with no problem. Of course, rebuilt that one as well but hey, she runs! Fires right up every touch of the button! I had to turn the idle speed adjustment out just past 1.5 turns to get her to stop coughing but she purrs. Would that make the motor a 35 horse now and will it hurt anything with the swap (seems like I've read something about it affecting the reeds... maybe)? Thanks for the advice once again. Jsboo72
